"[The iPad] it's the first device that actually is a reflection of me - or us. It's so revolutionary that it's no longer about me adapting myself to somebody else's set of programmings or the way in which a device is going to engage. It is the reverse. It is as though I'm looking in a mirror." I love this description because it encapsulates what should be the crux of any mobile learning strategy. That is, recognizing that mobile content delivery should be fully controlled by the learner. In other words, what content the learner wants; where and when they want it; and how they want it delivered - with no constraints.

In a world with spell check, why is studying spelling still important? It aids in reading. It helps cement the connection that is shared between sounds and letters. Learning high-frequency sight words also has been shown to help with both reading and writing. Not only is the ability to spell necessary in most occupations, but a person also needs to be able to spell well in order to be able to communicate and take notes and directions. 

"Knowing that the second grade would be studying the phases of the moon in December, I suggested making ePub books on the iPads illustrating those phases. After a careful examination of the apps available at the time, I decided that the best app for our purposes would be Book Creator, which has a super-simple interface and easy exporting to iBooks."

Collections of Apps can be expensive. How do you locate appropriate apps at a reasonable price or better still for FREE. Here are some really easy ways to locate apps that might be useful in your classroom.

"We've just been informed that Video Star (a uninversal app) will be free for a couple of days. Be sure to send us a link to any music videos that you create!"

"If you're a seasoned photographer, this might not be for you. But if you just got a new SLR, or you have had one for years and never shifted it off the "green square" idiot mode, then this could be a great way to spend $10. Available now."

Apple's new iPad is out, and the big question for us is how it might help teaching and learning in school. So to test it's metal, I'm writing this article on an iPad. Writing is first in line of the things students do most with their computers in school, so this should be a good test. But how about the other things at students need to do in a typical day? That's the real test. So we'll go back a few weeks to an article called A Day in the Life, and see how many of the things that Sally needed her computer for could be done with the iPad.

Representative Edward J. Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, who wrote recently enacted legislation that will require mobile devices to be more accessible to users with disabilities, said approximately three-fourths of communications and video devices need to be adapted for blind and deaf people. "Apple," he said in a statement, "is an outlier when it comes to devices that are accessible out of the box."

"Welcome to the world of the iPad! I hope that you, like I have, will find this amazing device transforming in your approach to the utilization of technology for teaching and learning. Hopefully, we will soon be saying goodbye to the fifty pound backpacks our students carry around, and all of their textbooks and learning resources will be available on this one, small device! a great, free alternative to purchasing an app or hijacking your iphone to stream video.

Qik is a homebrew 3rd party native App that can be install via Cydia under the 'Multimedia' category. It ties in with their free video web service that you need to register for. all you do is open Qik press record and it will start streaming live audio and video from your iPhone to your Qik account where it can be viewed from anywhere in the world. You can obviously select whether a video is publicly viewable or not.
