Another option for the iPad is to use a scavenger hunt with Google Earth. After doing a unit on Ancient Rome, you could give students clues: "Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, this historical monument was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire."
Students could use Google Earth to find a picture of the amphitheatre, tour it, and take a screen shot of it. This is assessing their knowledge of taught material, and giving them the opportunity to discover it in a way they would not be able to.
