Hayabusa successfully landed on the asteroid twice in 2005, but its attempt to fire a projectile into the asteroid surface to gather rocky samples failed. If there is any asteroid dust in the collection canister, scientists say that dust could still help our understanding of how the solar system formed. The 40-centimeter-wide containment capsule has a radio beacon, will separate from the main spacecraft high above the Earth's atmosphere and will deploy a parachute to help slow its landing in Woomera, southern Australia.
