South Korea Starcraft gamers accused of match rigging - 0 views

  •
Gamers in South Korea have been accused of match fixing. It's interesting to see how "real world" problems have entered cyberspace. It raises questions as to what the scope of internet governance should cover, in this case games governance. Should there be rules to govern this kind of act or should a "name and shame" method be introduced?

Thoughts on Flash - 0 views

Open Standards vs Cross Platform - it's starting to sound like politics. Confusing. Misleading. Impractical. Constrained.

Steve Jobs released an open letter on the Apple website explaining why they decided not to allow Flash on their iPhones, iPod Touches and the new iPad. Interestingly, the very first arguement is about open software and open program standards such as html5, css and JavaScript, so highly relevant for the course.
  •
A good discussion on Apple's view on Flash, following our class discussion on standards and the iPad not supporting Flash.

Came across this article the other day - basically saying that if Adobe wants to prove that Flash can run on iPhones without any major issues, they can simply use iPhones that have been "jailbroken" (meaning they've been hacked and any app can be downloaded - circumventing the App Store). Adobe could create a Flash app to run on the iPhones and prove its points about security and performance of Flash on mobile devices. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/may/18/apple-adobe-flash-player-solution

Google releases a map showing government requests to censor - 1 views

  •
The search giant has hit back at state requests (or court orders) to censor content on YouTube or in Google search by releasing a map showing the number of requests for censorship by country. Google has stated this move is "part of its continuing championing of openness of information" and insists the timing is purely coincidental regarding the complaint from 10 nations that Google releases new products without due consideration for privacy implications (as posted by Liz Gan), Reading the comments in these articles is always insightful. Someone points out that a lot of the requests may simply relate to slanderous items requested by courts to be removed (rather than evil government censorship requests).

Worldwide web goes truly global with Arabic urls - 0 views

  •
Following on from ICANN's approval 6 months ago to start using non-Latin scripts for domain names, Egypst has introduced .misr (the Arabic name for Egypt). Depending on the browser and language packs installed, if a user mouses over a .misr link on a web page, they may see this in Arabic script. Will be interesting to see how this and forthcoming addtional non-Latin domain names impact on the language barrier aspect of the digital divide. Saudi Arabia and UAE have also set up their own new domain names - ".Al-Saudiah" and ".Emarat".

Six Months after the ICANN, approved the use of non-Latin domain names, Egypt launched "Misr" domain (the Arabic name for Egypt). A new perspective of Internet in the Arabic world.

Teachers live in fear of cyberbully pupils - 0 views

  •
This article discusses how cyberbullying is not limited to strictly school children, or students rather teachers are also victims of cyberbullying. As students create social network hate groups, secretly film or photograph their teachers, and post embarassing moments online. identities of the victims are stolen, and then are used for either harassment, or illegal activity online. Though Facebook has mentioned that they will remove any content regarding teachers if reported, it brings to light a new issue. If laws need to address how we conduct ourselves online, should we compromise our freedom of speech (any jurisdiction that has constituted it) because the content is online?

Torrent site The Pirate Bay taken down after an injunction - 0 views

  •
A German court has granted an injunction against torrent site The Pirate Bay (TPB) brought against it by Hollywood film studios. The injunction means that TPB's bandwidth provider cannot connect it to internet servers, meaning it is unavailable. Of course, getting one torrent site shut down is just the tip of the iceberg - there are thousands of torrent sites out there and many may originate in countries where the service providers or site owners can't be prosecuted. TPB originates in Sweden. In 2009, TPB's four founders were sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay a $US3.6million fine.

BBC News - Former Mexico presidential candidate 'missing' - 1 views

  • The BBC's Inma Gil in Mexico City says the disappearance of the man known as "Diego the boss" has sparked all sorts of speculation in a country ravaged by drug related violence.
  • Some local media reported he had been kidnapped, others that he had been killed.
  •
Manuel Espino, leader of the PAN, Mexico's conservative party, twitted that Diego Fernandez de Ceballos, the politician who is missing, had been killed. He later said sorry and admited the information was not confirmed/true. But was it? Twitter's immediacy can put politicians in the spotlight even if that is not their intention.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/may/23/us-appoints-cyber-warfare-general - 1 views

  •
Increasing "probes" on US military networks has led to the appointment of a senior general to Cyber Command operations and approximately 30,000 troops have been re-assigned from IT support to "the frontlines of cyberwarfare". The US is increasingly anxious about the vulnerability of its networks to attack. Chinese, Russian and Korean hackers have been targeted as alleged attackers so far. There is concern that cyberwarfare techniques being used by the US are outpacing the ability to develop policy surrounding their use.
