Emerging Capital Partners, the Africa-focused private equity group, has money to invest and knows how it wants to spend it. The group has, historically, pumped a quarter of its investments into telecommunications and will maintain that commitment - but with a bit of a tweak. ECP thinks the African telecoms market is at an "inflection point" with the large, established operators looking for new ways to drive growth without investing vast sums on infrastructure. So, the fund has decided to concentrate on  smaller, infrastructural investments where it thinks there is value to be found - right now, that means mobile towers which can be shared by different operators to reduce costs.

Google Ventures, too, is all about the data. Beyond being able to help teams solve their UX, search, and scaling issues, the team takes hopes to mix both qualitative and quantitative data to put together the best approach to deciding in which startups to invest. According to Maris and Spencer, Google Ventures applies data tools and metrics to their prospective investments to decide which opportunities make the most sense. Naturally, as the team at Google Ventures itself (and their mothership as well) is home a full roster of computer scientists, engineers, machine learning specialists, and more, there's really no surprise that Google Ventures would be applying a data frame to the problem of what spaces and areas are most ripe for investment.

The 30-year-old central Wisconsin resident trusts no one but himself to store and protect his gold and silver-not banks, not investment funds, and certainly not the government. It's precisely because of this suspicion of institutions that he invests in those metals to begin with. In case of emergency, "you always want to have your precious metals within arms reach," he says.

First days have a bullish bias, and since 2003 the SP500 has closed higher 65.7% of the time on the first day of the month, versus only 54.8% when we look at all days.  This week's chart reveals that if a person had been invested only on the first day of the month, he would have beaten buy and hold.  The two plots are hypothetical equity curves based solely on the SP500 Index, and discounting dividends, interest, transaction costs, and other factors which would matter for real investing.  The point in doing this is not to calculate real performance, but rather to demonstrate the phenomenon. 

European banks are losing deposits as savers and money funds spooked by the region's debt crisis search for havens, a trend that could worsen economic and financial conditions. Retail and institutional deposits at Greek banks fell 19 percent in the past year and almost 40 percent at Irish lenders in 18 months. Meanwhile, European Union financial firms are lending less to one another and U.S. money-market funds have reduced their investments in German, French and Spanish banks.

The proposal includes a world central bank, taxes on financial transaction proportional to the sophistication of financial products, a fund for the recapitalization of world banks, and different rules for commercial and investment banking.

Norway's $570 billion sovereign wealth fund sold all its holdings in U.S. mortgage-backed securities as part of a shift of its fixed-income portfolio. The fund holds no mortgage bonds issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the U.S.-controlled mortgage financiers, and an "insignificant" amount of private home loan-backed bonds, said Yngve Slyngstad, chief executive officer of Norges Bank Investment Management, today in an interview in Oslo.

The Shanghai Gold Exchange will raise margin requirements for its gold forward contracts for the second time this month to 12 percent starting on Friday, in a move aimed at curbing excessive risk-taking following the rapid rally in gold prices. China's main precious metals exchange will also widen daily trading limits for those gold contracts to 9 percent, up from 7 percent, the SGE said on its website on Tuesday.
