C’est dans cette réalités, qu’une des conséquences directes est le problème identitaire permettant de savoir avec qui ou avec quoi on est en contact. Souvent, il est même mieux de ne pas savoir et tout simplement se concentrer sur l’utilité de la relation sociale qui vient d’être établie. Dans ce cas, lorsqu’il y a un problème, on cherche à savoir le pourquoi. Cela n’empêche que les TIC évoluent vers une imitation presque parfaite de la vie en société et donc par la même occasion, l’identité devient ainsi une issue à prendre en compte, au même niveau que les outils TIC que permettent la création des groupes et communautés.
