When I tell people I'm a writing professor, I see first-hand how their anxieties about grammar instruction and the "red pen" live on years after their experiences with freshman composition have ended. When talking about what I do, people start clarifying their diction, altering their grammar, even avoiding eye contact.

I haven't ever experienced that, Demetri. What browser are you using? I just upgraded to FF3, and it still seems to work.

Hi Demetri,
I agree, but I couldn't figure out a quick way to remove the file without removing the post. I usually check for copyright issues, but I was so interested in the possible discussion, I added it without checking. In the near future, copyright issues may be a non-issue, but for now, we do need to follow the same rules we give the students so thanks for pointing it out. (Lucy also added it to this group, but I will let her delete her link!)
We do have students and parents who fit the description in the article, and several of us are discussing it on a private ning. One teacher noted the point about solitude vs the need to be connected all the time, wondering if this contributed to the lack of reflection or deep thinking we are seeing in students. At any rate, food for thought:)
