    "Extremists of all stripes are increasingly using social media to recruit, radicalize and raise funds, and ISIS is one of the most adept practitioners of this approach...." --I thought this seemed relevant as I prepare to sign up for my first ever Twitter account for this class. Social networks are increasingly being used for purposes other than just casually connecting. Who would have thought that Twitter would ever be used as a platform for an extremist military group to spread their propaganda?

    Yes - social media is powerful. I always thought educators were late to the game in using it to educate. Businesses and evidently, extremists organizations, are ahead of the game when it comes to targeting people's minds.

    I never even considered this as a possibility for a social media site to promote such an extremist military group. It makes you wonder what other types of groups are being promoted.

    "Users can sign up for a free account, share their own work, and access and curate their own content via their account." --I wonder if there is any way to casually peruse some of these OER materials without having to create an account. I want to know what I'm signing up for before I sign up for it!

    I hear you - I should probably be more cautious about signing up for things as well. I set up a gmail (virginialoh76) for this very purpose - it is my "sign-up" account.

      This is an interesting topic to think about - How often do teens read the manual?  I would say they tinker until the gadget serves its purpose and if they do have questions, they'll crowdsource via internet.  I doubt they would open up the manual.  
  • The advances in technology for consumers aren’t necessarily aimed at young people, but they tend to be the ones who embrace them first.

      I recently saw on KDKA, or some other Pittsburgh news affiliate, that the best or most accurate indicator of student performance is socioeconomic status (which I've seen eslsewhere). This study becomes more interesting with the results with a poorer community and it's positive outcomes.
