Overview of a program looking at connected learning describing a "gap between the more engaging social learning environments young people encounter outside of school, and the top-down and standardized curriculum that they encounter in most classrooms." It's much more communal and participation-oriented than the approach I take, promoting:  -- "Equity - when educational opportunity is available and accessible to all young people, it elevates the world we all live in.  -- Full Participation - learning environments, communities, and civic life thrive when all members actively engage and contribute.  -- Social connection - learning is meaningful when it is part of valued social relationships and shared practice, culture, and identity."  While I value both creativity and participation, I think it's important to allow that more or less participation are equally valuable. And I don't agree that "shared" practice, culture, and identity is essential. 

There are multiple layers to curation, each of which has benefits when applied to learning and performance: ·         Aggregation: Gathering and sharing relevant content. It releases the individual worker from needing to seek out the content. ·         Filtering: Instead of simply aggregating content, filtering shares only those resources that are most relevant and valuable. ·         Elevation: Recognizing a larger trend in the sea of seemingly less important content. ·         Mashups: Merging two or more unrelated pieces of content to form a new message. ·         Timelines: Organizing random pieces of content in chronological order to show the evolution of an idea. 

Mark Zuckerbergs mission is "rewire the way people spread and consume information." The point of that epic rewiring job is to facilitate sharing 

Blogs Blogs are a very underutilized writing space. Blogs share many characteristics with journals and thus can capture snapshots of what learners are thinking, and when; plus they often can also capture the sources of some of their thinking. Blogs help learners understand the growth cycle of learning new concepts and how and why they think the way they do. Here are some ideas on how blogs, both personal and class, might be used. · Personal commentary and self-reflection · Capturing thought processes and generating new ideas · Assist learners in finding their "voice" · Places for collegial commenting and suggestion · Making thinking visible: analysis, synthesis, application

MOOCs aren't for every learner. This article provides both sides of the story around some common components of most MOOCs. To provide the reader a participant's point of view of MOOCs, our collective interpretations (along with impressions shared with us by others) are encapsulated.

This wiki is a resource collection place for Nancy White, Full Circle Associates and an adjunct to the Online Facilitation list on Yahoogroups, founded in August 1999. Consider it a general playground around online facilitation and online community work. When I can, I will do client work here openly that may be useful to others. Consider it a shared resource. Facilitation: Is largely around helping people connect, share, and learn together; disrupting the walls that keep them apart, understanding the purpose behind their interactions and assisting them achieve this in the longer term. Moderation: When issues arise, 'moderation' is the set of communications and processes thing that deals with them.

Openness has not been oversold and that increased openness (of content, teaching/learning, analytics, policy, data, and technology) is really the only path forward for reform. Systems can be closed and blackboxed only once they are working well and the context in which they exist is stable. When everything is in a state of flux, we need opportunities for ideas to collide, innovations to be shared, concepts to be rehashed and mashedup, and iterative improvements to occur. Education today - at all levels - faces the challenge of tremendous change and unstettledness. Rigid systems break in periods of flux.
