Back then, a person was considered literate if they knew how to read, write and calculate, but now a person is expected to read critically, write persuasively and use logic in solving difficult problems. Also, technology in its present form did not exist in the 20th century, so computer skills were not a required skill for the majority of the population. Today, the inability to use technology is almost as much of an impediment to success as an inability to use language.
