The current state of technology in the classroom is somewhere between its infancy and bold experimentation. For every 1:1 tablet program or BYOD-pioneering district, there is a teacher in a poor urban district struggling to get her "smart" board thinking again, or another in a rural district dancing a little dance for his new document camera. The infographic below illustrates this point by offering statistics on what how many teachers are using what, and how they feel about it all. One interesting stat? 65% of teachers say technology let's them demonstrate things they could not show any other way. That one makes sense, though I'd think it might be closer to 100%.

Mxit is South Africa's largest social network with over 50 million subscribers. 70% of those subscribers are between the ages of 15 and 25. Mxit is available to anyone with a WAP-enabled phone and works on almost kinds of 3000 mobile handsets. South Africa has a mobile penetration of 105% and of that 60% of all users have WAP-enabled phones. These statistics indicate that if Siyavula wants to make it's openly-licensed content available to as many learners as possible, Mxit simply cannot be ignored.

Our society is held back by many digital divides. Those who have computers and those who don't. Those who have Internet access and those who don't. Those who create mobile apps in their spare time and those who are over 21.
