"Nine of the 10 countries with the lowest Human Development Indicators have experienced conflict in the last 20 years. Countries facing stark inequality and weak institutions are at increased risk of conflict." The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously issued a statement pointing out a close link between international security and economic development.

Dani Rodrik: The Poverty of Dictatorship - 0 views

  •
Perhaps the most striking finding in the United Nations' recent 20th anniversary "Human Development Report" is the outstanding performance of the Muslim countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Here was Tunisia, ranked sixth among 135 countries in terms of improvement in its Human Development Index, or HDI, over the previous four decades, ahead of Malaysia, Hong Kong, Mexico and India. Not far behind was Egypt, ranked 14th. The HDI is a measure of development that captures achievements in health and education alongside economic growth. Egypt and especially Tunisia did well enough on the growth front, but where they really shone was on these broader indicators...

Development needed in Eastern Turkey - 0 views

  •
Although Turkey's economic indicators outpace many countries around the world, major differences in regional development are still an issue in the country and call state policies into question. Turkey has witnessed noteworthy growth in the last decade. At the same time, the country was also successful in lowering the yearly inflation rate to a 41-year low, 6.4 percent, in 2010. But despite these and similar advancements, economic development has not attained the same pace in every region in the country.

OECD Leading Indicators Point to Growth - 0 views

  •
Most developed economies will grow at a steady pace in the months ahead, but growth in Italy and China appears to be slowing, according to an economic indicator from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The OECD's indicators are designed to provide early signals of turning points between the pickup and slowdown of economic activity and are based on a wide variety of data series that have a history of signaling changes in economic activity.

Buy Me Some Peanuts and Cracker Jack - 0 views

Interesting article, as it shows how San Diego is using the building of a new baseball park as a way of boosting the economic development in a "run down urban area". It talks about how most professional sports stadium builders try and say that it will boost economic development but in the end it sits there for most of the year without much economic development. This article shows how this one is different. San Diego is forcing the owner, John Moores, to build many hotels and other buildings around the area to pay back the city for helping to finance the stadium. In return it should produce economic development for the area.

Living Economy: Market failure and state involvement in the economy - 0 views

  •
This article considers the possible measures that the Maldives should consider in order to develop its not yet fully matured economy. Today, government intervention to reduce or diminish market failure takes many forms: direct controls, government regulation, government subsidies, taxation of negative externality engendering goods, etc. However, it has been strongly suggested that for a developing country such as the Maldives, "and given that there is no one perfect model of state involvement in the economy, effective and well managed Public Enterprises need to play a vital and integral role of the national economy." Further solutions for market failure in the Maldives are also discussed.

Poverty worsens as country grows - 0 views

  •
Economic growth (increase in the country's level of output, and therefore GDP) in the Philippians condemns a million more Filipinos to poverty from 2006 to 2009. This very example is valid proof that economic growth and development are two entirely different notions. It is shown, in this article how economic growth in the Philippians meant abatement of living standards and a national spread of poverty. Quite the opposite of what can be defined as economic development... " 'Some 185,000 families, or 970,000 Filipinos, became poor', the NCSB said" "The needy totalled 3.86 million families or 23.14 million individuals."

YEMEN: Frustration turns to demands for change - 0 views

  •
6 February 2011: In the past two weeks, Yemen has been rocked by some of the biggest anti-government demonstrations seen in a decade, as young people facing a grim economic future vent their frustration on the streets. In the UN Human Development Index (HDI), Yemen is ranked at 138 out of 179 states listed. The protesters fight poverty, corruption, and injustice, an issue clearly shown by the country's HDI ranking.

Prices of iPads - 2 views

  •
This article illustrates the differing prices of Apple's iPad devices in various countries. It cites reasons such as proximity to manufacturing base, average GDP per person as reasons for the disparity in prices across the globe. The article implies that the elasticity of iPads would be different in different regions of the world. The iPad as a device is interesting in the study of elasticity as it is akin to other forms of technology that are constantly developing. With more and more technology developing, elasticities for technological products are becoming more and more elastic due to the great number of substitutes available.

What does it mean to be pro-labor when labor is in decline? - 0 views

  •
America has done a better job keeping GDP up than almost any other developed nation affected by the Great Recession. But it's done a far worse job keeping unemployment down. Why? America has a very weak labor union movement. An underconsumption of labor union movements here engenders market failure. This article discusses this idea in further detail.

South Africa-Politics: The new growth plan and the three elephants in the room - 0 views

  •
South Africa has been, for quite a while now, experiencing significant market failure caused by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) falling over their feet to emulate private sector models (at the same time suffering from maladministration, waste, subversion of corporate governance, power struggles and managers caring more for their glamorous images and fringe benefits than service to community). The pressure for SOEs to be genuine development agents hardly came to be, as efforts in this direction were never really enforced. The New Growth Plan (NGP) implicitly and explicitly acknowledges these failures and is in haste to fill the gap by seeking to drive growth in jobs via the creation of new sectors as well as lifting the energy of old, sluggish and declining sectors and industries. It's a race against time. More about this NGP is discussed in the article.

Scots have high literacy rates - 1 views

  •
The article discusses Scotland's high literacy rates. As the article itself states 'Literacy levels are a very important measure of the social and economic well-being of any society'. 73 % of Scots have 'internationally recognized' literacy skills from the article. This provides a good indication of Scotland's development. Literacy rates are also key determinants of economic growth (plentiful and educated workforce more likely to be productive and contribute to economic growth) and thus reflects well upon Scotland's economic and social potential.

Obama Plans to Nationalize Wireless Internet - 0 views

  •
President Obama, a seemingly great fan of Keynesian economics has developed a program of government expansion and nationalization of various aspects of the lives of the American people (such as the government takeover of health care, intervention in banks, and the nationalization of various automobile companies such as General Motors), the federal government is now embarking upon a program of government-directed wireless internet (Wi-Fi) delivery.
