The answer is easy: YES, especially if the teacher has access to a Mac desktop or (preferably) laptop and a wifi network in the classroom.

ShowMe (free) This an incredibly useful app for ELLs and for ESL teachers too. In my opinion, it is one of the most versatile apps in the market. It allows you to easily create screen-casts, by recording your voice over whiteboard drawing or images.

This website and article is all about technology integration for ELL students. The website lists free apps that can be used for students to support their vocabulary growth. There are four apps that can be used from this website. One of them in particular, Futaba, is an app I have used with students before. It allows students to not only extend their vocabulary but it also works on their reading skills.

You asked.....and we listened! We are so excited to bring you our apps for Special Education list. Starting with just 60 of our favorites (It was SO hard to choose!), this list is a growing and active list so be sure to check in from time to time as it promises to get bigger.

I found that iPads for English Language Learners website to be a great resource not only for the ELL student, but for the entire classroom. It displays the app icon and the app title along with a description. This website was easy to scan through because it organizes the apps into categories (math, science, productivity, translators, etc…). The only downside to this app is that it did not provide the price.

There are plenty of flashcard services on the web that students can use for rote practice of vocabulary words. The following five apps offer a little bit more than flashcards by providing some larger context for the words and phrases that students can study through them.

Getting the hang of a new language is tough. As someone attempting to re-learn French, I can say this without absolute certainty. Lucky for students like myself, technology is a huge help. It makes it easier to hear a native speaker 'pronounce' something for you.

This website includes both apps and web-based tools that introduce programming/coding to elementary students.

This website lists apps available to introduce coding to students as young as Kindergarten.

The following apps are extremely useful tools to implement in an English as a second language classroom environment (Apple, n.d.; Williams, 2012; Writers, 2012).This website was about using Ipads in the ESL classroom. Many of the apps were great for helping students to nurture vocabulary skills. One of the apps that looked most interesting was Adventures for Kids, the app had story-based games which nurture vocabulary skills through repetition. Another app that looked interesting was the Phonetic Focus, it is one of the most popular ESL apps. It has a phonetic typewriter, games, flash cards, audio recording and playback, and many other tools to help master the English language.
