STEM occupations generate the technological changes that shape all other occupations, and the outlook for such jobs is encouragingly positive. Here's a birds-eye view of the growing demand for STEM careers. From 2000 to 2010, growth in STEM jobs (7.9 percent) was three times as fast as employment growth in non-STEM jobs (2.6 percent) in the United States.

A new study by Tony Carnevale and his colleagues (at the Georgetown University Center for on Education and the Workforce) on STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) makes an important point: As the nature of innovation changes, the cognitive competencies traditionally associated with STEM are intensifying in a host of non-STEM occupations.

Project Kaleidoscope, Mobilizing STEM Education for a Sustainable Future, and the Disciplinary Associations Network for Sustainability (DANS) are joining expertise on behalf of students to: increase their learning in undergraduate STEM courses, and better prepare them for the real-world 21st century "Big Questions" that relate to real-world issues such as energy, air and water quality, and climate change.
