About a decade ago, hotels were stagnant when it came to technological upgrades, however travelers, especially those on business, are requiring to "stay connected" in world that seems to have entered a new era when it comes to real time communication. In order to stay afloat in this market, hotels are finding themselves strategizing how they can provide technology perks that will help out shine its competitor.
As the Generation Y population continues to make its way into the decision making positions of the economies around the world, hotels will continue to find themselves challenged at what form of technology will attract guests to their property. This generation seeks productivity, and expects to have the same amenities, if not more, than what they are used to at home. Therefore, hotels are teaming up with different companies to help give guests that "wow factor" we all expect when away on vacation.
Investments are being made around the world to meet these needs. Several hotels offer free Wifi throughout the property, others equip rooms with iPads to facilitate guests with reservations and hotel accommodations and maps. "According to a 2011 Concur/Global Business Travel Association study, 91 percent of business travelers use a laptop computer, 81 percent use wireless broadband, 73 percent a personal smartphone and 67 percent use mobile travel apps on their phone." We truly are and have been on the road to a new era, and in order for hotels to stand above their competitors their future relies on the investments made through there technology department, if they didn't have one in the past I can assure you they will need one now and with enough dollars in the budget to cover upgrades and a staff that maintains and monitors these systems.
