Cassina’s history began in 1927 when 18-year-old Cesare Cassina and his brother Umberto decided to found their first company. Umberto and Cesare were sons and grandsons of carpenters from Meda, an Italian city famous for its craftsmanship traditions and numerous design furniture manufacturing workshops and factories. Initially it was a small family business specialized in the wood furniture production, later they introduced upholstered furniture to their business. Ninety years later Cassina has become one of the top Italian furniture brands, a real symbol of high-end design.

In large part Cassina’s success can be explained by the strong personality and artistic instinct of Cesare Cassina. He wasn’t not a simple businessman but he actively participated in all the creative process, offering young and unknown designers a unique opportunity to express themselves. He was a man of vision who invested his time and money in some designers who later became real stars of Italian and international design, like Gaetano Pesce. Cesare Cassina gave a salary to the young designer without asking for anything in return, offering him a unique opportunity to continue his personal research. Later when Gaetano Pesce developed a revolutionary method for vacuum-packaging foam seats, resuming their full shape once unzipped from their packaging by the customer at home, he immediately proposed it to Cassina. Even today, Cassina offers a unique chance to young and unknown designers to express themselves and to experiment in their factory.

Cassina has collaborated with the greatest Italian and international designers and architects: Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ettore Sottsass, Gio Ponti, Gaetano Pesce and Vico Magistretti. Besides, it worked with numerous top designers of the moment: Jamie Hayon, Konstantin Grcic, Piero Lissoni, Rodolfo Dordoni, Mario Bellini, Jean-Marie Massaud, Tokujin Yoshioka, Philippe Starck and Patricia Urquiola, who became Cassina’s art director in 2015.
