What is Acid Rain and What Causes It? - 0 views

  • Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. Sunlight increases the rate of most of these reactions. The result is a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
  • Acid rain causes acidification of lakes and streams and contributes to damage of trees at high elevations (for example, red spruce trees above 2,000 feet) and many sensitive forest soils. In addition, acid rain accelerates the decay of building materials and paints, including irreplaceable buildings, statues, and sculptures that are part of our nation's cultural heritage.
  • Almost all of the electricity that powers modern life comes from burning fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, and oil. acid deposition is caused by two pollutants that are released into the atmosphere, or emitted, when these fuels are burned: sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Where Greenhouse Gases Come From - Energy Explained, Your Guide To Understanding Energy - 0 views

  • Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, resulting from the combustion of petroleum, coal, and natural gas, represented 81% of total U.S. human-caused (anthropogenic) greenhouse gas emissions in 2008.
  • Another greenhouse gas, methane, comes from landfills, coal mines, oil and natural gas operations, and agriculture; it represented about 11% of total emissions.
  • Coal Is the Dominant Emissions Source Related to Electricity Generation Electricity generation consumed 41% of U.S. primary energy in 2008 and was responsible for 41% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Coal accounted for 83% of carbon emissions resulting from the generation of electric power.

Environmental effects of coal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Coal mining causes a number of harmful effects. When coal surfaces are exposed, pyrite (iron sulfide), also known as "fool's gold", comes in contact with water and air and forms sulfuric acid. As water drains from the mine, the acid moves into the waterways, and as long as rain falls on the mine tailings the sulfuric acid production continues, whether the mine is still operating or not.

During coal mining, if the coal is exposed to water (rain), it forms sulfuric acid. This acid can enter water sources. This occurs with abandoned mines as well.
  • Methane is the naturally occurring product of the decay of organic matter as coal deposits are formed with increasing depths of burial, rising temperatures, and rising pressures over geological time. A portion of the methane produced is absorbed by the coal and later released from the coal seam and surrounding disturbed strata during the mining process.

Methane is created when organic matter decays (into fossil fuel). Some of it is absorbed by the coal. It is later released when the coal is mined.
  • Strip mining, or surface mining of coal completely eliminates existing vegetation, destroys the genetic soil profile, displaces or destroys wildlife and habitat, degrades air quality, alters current land uses, and to some extent permanently changes the general topography of the area mined.
