The Civil War and Reconstruction | edX - 0 views

  •
Civil War and Reconstruction, which introduces students to the most pivotal era in American history. The Civil War transformed the nation by eliminating the threat of secession and destroying the institution of slavery. It raised questions that remain central to our understanding of ourselves as a people and a nation - the balance of power between local and national authority, the boundaries of citizenship, and the meanings of freedom and equality. This XSeries will examine the causes of the war, the road to secession, the conduct of the Civil War, the coming of emancipation, and the struggle after the war to breathe meaning into the promise of freedom for four million emancipated slaves. One theme throughout the series is what might be called the politics of history - how the world in which a historian lives affects his or her view of the past, and how historical interpretations reinforce or challenge the social order of the present.

This is very well done. I have added a link in the first chapter of Interactive Internet Economic Notes http://www.textbooksfree.org/Economics_1_Economics_Defined.htm and plan to add individuals throughout the notes. Chapter 3 on the Characteristics of Market System Capitalism and Political Economy may be useful. http://www.textbooksfree.org/Economics_3_Basic_Characteristics_of_Capitalism.htm. One page on capitalism is at http://www.textbooksfree.org/Quick%20Notes%20History%20Political%20Economy%20Capitalism.htm.

Make Teaching History Fun with Video - 20 views

I LOVE HISTORY! But do your students? Chances are some of them might think it's boring - hours of reading and memorizing dates. And, let's face it; history can be a little dry sometimes.

Crash Course World History - 29 views

  •
A fast, fun overview of world history content. Comparable in some ways to The Millennium series by CNN. Some think this would be good for "flipping" the classroom. I happen to disagree - since it is too fast. Better for review imo.
  •
Entertaining and informative series on topics in world history.

My students LOVE LOVE LOVE this series! I use them as unit openers in my honors world history class to previw the big ideas and hook them to that unit. I create higher order thinking type questions they answer after or questions where they predict things about the unit. But the videos are awesome!

Howstuffworks "History Videos" - 23 views

  •
Large collection of short historical videos which you can download if you have a YouTube downloader in your browser. Or else if you are lucky and your school has decent internet, you could just watch them in the classroom (*wistful sigh*).

Dr. Todd A. Beach 's Presentations on SlideShare - 13 views

  •
Has some very good powerpoints with accompanying podcasts which were produced for an AP World History class in Minnesota. The powerpoints can be downloaded but if you want to play the accompanying podcast with the presentation (would be great for the classroom) you have to stream it live.
  •
Just realised you can download the mp3 of the podcast if you have one of those naughty YouTube downloader things. You can then play the podcast and the presentation simultaneously. Tricky but possible.

Play this video for students after providing them with a brief explanation of Watergate. Have them offer their interpretations.
