SAT performance and calculator use. In a large-scale study by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), U.S. college-bound juniors who were permitted to use calculators did significantly better on a test with items drawn from the SAT than students who were not allowed to use calculators. Questions for the  exam were selected to be more sensitive to calculator effects than the actual SAT. Three out of four ethnic groups (Whites, AfricanAmericans, and Asian-Americans) and both genders benefited equally from calculator use, while Latinos benefited slightly more than the other groups
