Boston Public Library's online resource for parents and students. The 'schoolrooms' feature is useful in that an administrator can set up the pages so that students are guided to very specific websites within the larger U.S library network.

Tom Daccord and Justin Reich have a great blog on their EdTechTeacher website.  Coming up on March 3-4, they are hosting the EdTechTeacher2012 Winter Conference "Leading Change in Changing Times"  featuring familiar faces:  Chris Dede and Stone Wiske.

Thank you for posting - this is fascinating. This is not only a threat to Blackboard, but also the MOOC companies (Coursera, Udacity, etc.). If the tool continues to be developed in terms of functionality and ease of use, AND third party developers build out applications that plug into this platform, then colleges and universities will start to build their own online courses, and not farm out their content to the Coursera's of the world... This reminds of the dot com era (circa 2000) when companies large and small hired "web development" firms to create websites for them. Now companies largely do this themselves...

Thanks for sharing Mohit. It's great that it's open source and allows teachers all over the world to build their own courses. I wonder what this would do to the larger online course companies...

Cool alternate reality game that aims to get students involved in solving global problems.

This is a really cool online community where students (or participants) get weekly real-world challenges and then use entrepreneurial thinking/skills to solve the problem in their community and then post "evidence" of solving the problem on the website. Students rack up points for solving different real world problems, which can---if they get enough points---get them access to internships with high-level social entrepreneurs and possibly even seed money for a project.

The Design Thinking Toolkit for Educators contains the process and methods of design, adapted specifically for the context of education. You can download the toolkit by registering on the website.

I really like this approach. I'm going to check out the toolkit. I like the intro video and it's approach to design thinking in education as part of the story that each teacher has. This reminded me of what Dede spoke about today in class about how he always starts out with asking and understanding why a teacher is teaching...

Great find, Rupangi, thanks for posting it! I like IDEO's approach to things, and they have been branching out into development, too. It's cool that they are promoting design for education; I definitely think there are lots of application opportunities!

Google has launched an open source course building web application for the growing list of K-12 and big-name universities developing online classes. The barebones website is a lightweight way to bring course material online, track student engagement (with web traffic and surveys), and evaluate performance.

I came across this website in the context of an article on the importance of scientific accuracy and how it stimulates inquiry.

This conference is happening this weekend. The website lists various means of hearing the lectures and discussions that will happen.

This is great! I remember doing the Flat Stanley project when I was a kid. It's cool to see it progress with the technology.

This website briefly talks about Kajeet's solution to the safety and filter issues of internet use in schools that we have talked about in class.

This short article highlights some interesting technologies/websites for elementary age students, including the virtual world, "whyville."

Here is a website with a virtual world game for kids. You travel around a world called miamiopia in the form of a balloon avatar. You come across questions from content domains and I think then you answer questions and earn coins. If you can't answer the questions, as happened to me when trying to earn coins by answering questions identifying dinosaurs, you are taken to a web site with the information so you can learn it.
