Pearson's take on MOOCs - 2 views

  •
Kind of like Professor Dede's post about McGraw-Hill's interest in e-learning, here is a blog post from Pearson about MOOCs. I think his take (Jeff Borden, one of their VPs) is pretty accurate, in that we need a version 2 where it's not as lecture-based as version 1. I would guess that they are working on their own "version 2" solution (perhaps with Knewton?).

Maria, do you know if this event is open to the public, or more a "sponsor-day" event? I would love to go!

MOOC for school leaders? - 0 views

Kind of interesting...but two schools (HS and University?) in Canada are sponsoring a MOOC for school leaders on how to push your school / organization forward.

PBS initiatives in schools - 0 views

Some interesting PBS initiatives in schools. They also have some good stats on teachers and technology (not sure how much is reflected in the infographic I posted earlier).

Nice infographic from PBS on what teachers want in the classroom, for technology.

Elsevier partners with edX to provide free versions of textbooks to MOOC students | Ins... - 0 views

  •
Kind of ironic, but "old tech" using new tech to promote sales of old tech. Basically Elsevier is giving students in an edX course a free, static version of one of its textbooks. Students then see a link to purchase a discounted, dynamic version--and it seemed to bump up sales! Also interesting is that edX gets a cut of the book sales--maybe another avenue for them to become sustainable, in addition to charging for certification.

The Other Side to Technology in Higher Education - 0 views

  •
Talks about systematic change to education via technology and social media. Gives some good examples of two initiatives in schools. I think it's pretty relevant to what we talked about in class yesterday.

Featured on UC Irvine's Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center - 0 views

  •
UC Irvine's TLTC frontpage linked to this archived Google presentation on how teachers can use Google apps in Higher Education. Almost felt sales-pitchy and I wondered how much time and energy faculty are willing to invest in configuring and setting that stuff up for their own class, as opposed to using whatever the university's IT team has set up and standardized around.

Samsung chooses Memphis to test school technology for U.S. market - 0 views

  •
Hm...so Samsung invested in smart whiteboard and tablet technology in a Memphis school as part of their "market research" into the US education market. I'm not sure if this is a good thing? Hopefully the teachers at this school got some sort of professional development on how to use this technology with good pedagogy, and aren't just going to use the technology in the traditional ways...

Hamilton Project (i.e. Brookings Institute?) to Publish Paper on Technology in K-12 - 0 views

  •
A set of workshops in DC about transformations in education. Papers about the topics will be released next week (Sept 27), for those of us who can't be in DC. One paper will be about "Harnessing Technology to Improve K-12 Education," so it will be interesting to see what the authors say. Though both authors are business school professors, so I'm not sure how they got chosen to write on this topic? Must be a good business to be in Ed Tech right now...

Program Director for Ed Tech and Instructional Design warns against "drinking the Ed Te... - 0 views

Interesting article about not just to believe everything you read about Ed Tech transforming the classroom. I think the report (and Richard Rose, the Program Director) does a pretty good job of basically warning educators not to believe all the results they see published about Ed Tech. And that this actually aligns with the vision in the NETP (try things in small zones before scaling up).

TED talk: Coursera co-founder Daphne Koller talks about online education - 0 views

  •
Pretty interesting insights. I think the vision matches what most people think of, though I'm not convinced by her talk that it's fundamentally different from the Open Universities or U of Phoenix (except that it's free and put on by top "brick-and-mortar" universities).

NYC School Districts allow texting - 0 views

  •
Although, funny enough, it's not texting for learning, but rather they are communicating information to parents, to keep them engaged and involved. I did think the part about the NH school allowing cell phone use to reduce distractions and allow teachers to focus on teaching instead of enforcement was also interesting. Technology-bans were affecting their effectiveness!

More info on Stanford online platform - 1 views

  •
This builds on Emily's post from the weekend with s bit more detail on one of standford's alternative online platforms. The venture lab platform is not the standard mooc idea, but sounds like they built in more collaboration and teamwork features. So maybe now moocs can reach a wider audience with non-math / science interests?

MobiMOOC--a MOOC for learning about learning! - 0 views

  •
We just missed it, but right now we're in the midst of MobiMOOC, a MOOC organized by educators to teach other educators about mobile learning. Kind of a neat concept, I think! But one of the keys is how good is the instruction in helping educators integrate in mobile learning with good pedagogy instead of just showcasing mobile technologies...probably one of the common dangers with these types of initiatives.

Publishers Double Down - 0 views

  •
Kind of an emerging use of old-technology, but universities and publishers are fighting over the use of electronic scans / copies of book chapters used for classes. I think ti's interesting how content hasn't necessarily changed at the university level like it has for K-12 (like interactive textbooks instead of decades-old material). Maybe due to specialization at universities? Or just that professors at university are less open to adoption of "new" material?

Gates, MOOCs and Remediation - 1 views

  •
Looks like there is some funding available to scientifically evaluate MOOCs for remedial education! I think the results will be interesting to see, since I remember from discussion or a reading that some ed tech seems to work for autism and special needs students...so maybe MOOCs also have a niche.
