What is Licorice? Why is it important? Licorice is a plant known scientifically as Glycyrrhiza glabra. It is found mainly in Europe and Asia, including the Mediterranean area, Russia, the Middle East, and China. It is popular for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, promoting skin healing. It is part of the legume family, including peas and beans. We can recognize the licorice plant by its hard roots, purple flowers, and leaves that twist around its stem. Many beneficial components such as glycyrrhizin, flavonoids, and liquiritin can be found in licorice root extract. These components can be very beneficial for the skin; for example, Glycyrrhizin is proven to reduce skin irritation and redness by stopping the enzyme responsible for skin irritation. It can also limit the symptoms of eczema and rosacea, which will, in turn, help maintain a better skin tone.
