Bottled water is comprehensively and stringently regulated in the United States at both the federal and state levels, which helps ensure its safety and quality. At the federal level, bottled water is regulated as a packaged food product by the FDA under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). It must meet FDA's general food regulations as well as standards of identity, standards of quality, good manufacturing practices and labeling requirements specifically promulgated for bottled water.

An interesting New York Times article discusses the use of plastics to make fleece. It was not until 1993 that industry-leasers Patagonia and Polartec began pursuing the use of recycled plastics in their materials. In recent years, however, the industry has greatly improved the use of recycled plastics (such as bottled water containers) to embrace environmental issues and still keep consumers warm and comfortable.

Nigeria's first house built from discarded plastic bottles is proving a tourist attraction in the village of Yelwa. Hundreds of people - including government officials and traditional leaders - have been coming to see how the walls are built in the round architectural shape popular in northern Nigeria.
