A recent survey conducted by the British Society Attitudes (BSA) and published by the King's Fund and the Nuffield Trust highlighted people's satisfaction with the National Health Services (NHS) to be a new record low since the survey's inception in 1983. The latest findings that are based on the public satisfaction and opinion with the NHS and social care, and funding in the context of prominent national debate about taxation and healthcare spending reveal the satisfaction with the NHS to have dwindled across all services and demographics in 2023. Public contentment has sharply declined, with only 24 per cent expressing satisfaction in 2023, a significant drop from 2020. Factors contributing to this dissatisfaction include prolonged waiting times for GP and hospital appointments, staffing shortages, and perceived inadequate government spending.

Scottish Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr has slammed the SNP government for making taxpayers cover the cost of 'free' prescriptions for basic painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen on the NHS. An analysis conducted by Kerr, first reported in The Telegraph, revealed that the NHS Scotland pays as much as £8.53 per pack of paracetamol under its free prescription policy. Public Health Scotland data shows that nearly 2.5 million prescriptions for the common painkiller were issued in 2023-24, costing more than £14 million. Including an estimated £7 million to cover the pharmacy "dispensing fee", the total cost equates to £8.53 per prescription. In contrast, paracetamol can be purchased for as little as 37p in supermarkets. Similarly, Kerr's analysis found that ibuprofen-available over the counter for just 39p-cost the NHS £6.87 per prescription. Kerr condemned the costs as "beyond absurd," accusing the SNP of financial mismanagement.

In its submission to the Treasury ahead of the Comprehensive Spending Review this autumn, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) says it is essential for the government to deliver "meaningful investment" for the UK's Life Science Vision. Richard Torbett, chief executive of the ABPI, has written to the UK's chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, making a case for investing in the life sciences sector while stressing on the contribution it has made to global public health during the pandemic. The government's pledge to invest £22 billion per year in R&D by the end of this parliament is an essential foundation for life sciences growth, but the sector also needs the right incentives to encourage private business investment, it said.
