Breast Cancer Survivors Face Second Cancer Crisis - 0 views

  •
A groundbreaking study analysing data from nearly 600,000 cancer patients in England has shed light on the increased risk of second cancers among breast cancer survivors. The research conducted by University of Cambridge in association with the Lancet Regional Health-Europe studied data from over 580,000 female and over 3,500 male breast cancer survivors diagnosed between 1995 and 2019 using the National Cancer Registration Dataset. The findings suggest that survivors of breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer in the UK, face a substantially higher risk of developing second primary cancers. According to the research, female survivors exhibited a twofold increase in the risk of contralateral breast cancer compared to the general population. The data highlighted an 87 per cent greater risk of endometrial cancer, a 58 per cent greater risk of myeloid leukemia, and a 25 per cent greater risk of ovarian cancer in female survivors.

Shocking Projection: UK's Stroke Cases to Surge 60% by 2035 - 0 views

  •
In the next 10 years, the incidence of first-time stroke cases in the UK is projected to increase by 60 per cent, costing the government £75bn in healthcare and lost productivity, a charity has suggested. A new manifesto published by the Stroke Association has urged the next UK government to make stroke "the priority", stressing that the next decade is crucial for stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. Currently, stroke is the UK's fourth biggest killer and a leading cause of disability. On a daily basis, 281 individuals experience a stroke. Next year, the cost of stroke in the UK will be £43 billion. The charity predicted that by 2035, there will be 151,000 hospital admissions due to stroke every year, averaging 414 admissions per day, with 42,000 people estimated to die every year. In 2035, the UK is projected to have 2.1 million stroke survivors, imposing a financial burden of £75 billion on the public purse, nearly half the current NHS budget.

Contaminated blood victims £100K govt compensation in UK - 0 views

  •
Thousands of people in Britain infected with HIV and hepatitis C through contaminated blood transfusions will receive a compensation payment decades after the scandal, the government announced on Wednesday (August 17). The payment of £100,000 ($121,000) to each victim is an interim one after Brian Langstaff, the chairman of a public inquiry into the long-running scandal, last month recommended making immediate payouts before waiting for an ongoing inquiry to conclude. The former High Court judge said that the "moral case for compensation is beyond doubt". The government said the tax-free payments, to survivors of the scandal and bereaved partners of the thousands estimated to have died from the contaminated blood, would be made by the end of October. Thousands of people with haemophilia contracted hepatitis C and HIV after receiving blood transfusions, mainly from the United States, through the NHS in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Due to a shortage of blood products in Britain, the NHS bought much of its stock from US suppliers whose donors, including prisoners and other groups at high risk of infection, had been paid for their blood.

Ashley Dalton Appointed DHSC Minister Amid Cabinet Changes - 0 views

  •
Ashley Dalton MP has been appointed as a parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), following the dismissal of Andrew Gwynne MP by prime minister Keir Starmer last week. Dalton has served as the MP for West Lancashire since her election on 9 February 2023. Describing herself as "a mum, a carer, a cancer survivor, and a proud Lancashire lass," Dalton shares on her official page: "I grew up just outside of West Lancashire in Leyland and spent 25 years working with grassroots communities in local government. My life has been dedicated to helping residents and improving local services, and I am proud to continue doing so as your MP." Starmer sacked Gwynne, MP for Gorton and Denton since 2005, over alleged anti-semitic, racist and sexist remarks. He has also been suspended from the Labour Party. On Saturday, Gwynne expressed regret for his "badly misjudged" comments, which led to his dismissal as junior health minister.
