International day for persons with disabilities on 3rd December - Note on schemes for the welfare of persons with disabilities and concessions available to them. The Government of India is committed for the realization of full participation, protection of rights, and equal opportunities to all including persons with disabilities. India is a country where most of the population lives in the rural areas and accessing the health and rehabilitation services has always been a challenge. In a Backgrounder issued yesterday, a brief summary of the major steps initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in this direction were given. A new study from the University of Nottingham has highlighted the impact of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and information overload on employee mental health, linking these factors to increased burnout in the workplace. The research, conducted by the University's Schools of Psychology and Medicine and recently published in SAGE Open, surveyed 142 employees to explore the 'dark side' of digital working. It found that employees who are worried about missing out on important information and updates, as well as those overwhelmed by the constant flow of information, are more likely to suffer stress and burnout. Elizabeth Marsh, a PhD student from the School of Psychology, highlighted: "The digital workplace is now recognised as a key strategic asset in organisations that enables worker productivity and flexibility in context of hybrid working. However, the potential downsides in terms of worker well-being also need to be considered, especially given the proliferation of digital communication channels and tools since Covid." The study's findings support the team's previous research, which indicated employees who are more mindful in the digital workplace are better protected against stress, anxiety and overload. Traditionally, FoMO has been associated with social media. Now, this new research has shown its impact in the workplace.

What do we know about the state of wellbeing within the profession? As the profession's independent charity, it is crucial that Pharmacist Support keeps abreast of the changing needs of the profession to enable us to meet the needs of those we are here to help. To do this, each year we collaborate with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) to carry out an annual Workforce Wellbeing Survey. The last survey carried out was in the latter part of 2021 but nothing has changed since. And the results provided stark reading. Of the 1,014 responses received, many reported living with 'poor' or 'very poor' mental health and wellbeing. The survey results highlight a continued clear need for mental health and wellbeing support. Within the survey, it was identified that there is a very clear need for independent assistance, with many saying they feel unable to talk to their employers about their mental health issues. The need for our charity has never been clearer.

Global consumer healthcare company Haleon has launched a new centre of excellence for a global leader in consumer health which will bring together world leading academics in human behaviour and frontline healthcare professionals including community pharmacists. Unveiled at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Congress in 'sunny' Seville, Spain on September 20, the Centre will operate as a community of healthcare professionals and specialists in behavioural science, health psychology and the social sciences to solve some of the most pressing everyday health challenges. Named the Centre for Human Sciences (CHS) the initiative will be the first major programme for healthcare professionals since the Haleon's launch on July 18 as an independent, global leader in consumer health. The Centre's mission is to support practising health professionals - pharmacists, pharmacy assistants and dental professionals - in serving their patients and communities. Combining science with deep human understanding, CHS will bring expertise in physiology together with human sciences to deliver real world-solutions and tangible interventions, resulting in measurable improvements in health outcomes through sustained behavioural change. Chronic pain The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage. Although universally experienced by everyone, the perception of pain is a deeply personal experience influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, and constitutes an essential behavioural feedback mechanism aimed at protecting us from harm. Pain may be perceived as either acute or chronic. Chronic pain, defined as pain that persists longer than the normal healing time, constitutes a substantial healthcare burden, affecting approximately 20 per cent of people worldwide and accounts for 15-20 per cent of physician consultations. Chronic pain is often associated with disrupted mood and sleep, substance misuse and other chronic conditions. Additionally, comorbidities of chronic pain may also lead to complex medication regimens that increase the risks of adverse drug interactions and unwanted side effects.

Mental health awareness has increased in recent years, however, since the COVID-19 pandemic, awareness of our mental stability and how we process our feelings has become all too apparent. It is important that we all learn to be open with our feelings and also be able to support others who may be struggling with their own mental health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) conceptualises mental health as a "state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community."

Baby teeth could one day lead to the development of a much-needed tool for identifying children who are at risk for psychological problems, a study by the University of Bristol has concluded. The research has been published in the 'JAMA Network Open' - a monthly journal published by the American Medical Association. The origin of this study traces back several years, when senior author Erin Dunn - a social and psychiatric epidemiologist and an investigator in MGH's Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit - learned about work in the field of anthropology that could help solve a longstanding problem in her own research. She studies the effects of childhood adversity, which research suggested, is responsible for up to one-third of all mental health disorders. Dunn is particularly interested in the timing of these adverse events and in uncovering whether there are sensitive periods during child development when exposure to adversity is particularly harmful.

Researchers at Duke University, after analysing millions of patient visits to primary care physicians, found that mental health concerns are second only to musculoskeletal complaints, such as aches and pains, in everyday care. According to the study, one in nine patients sought care primarily for a mental health concern, a figure that increases to one in five for those in mid-life Published recently in Nature Mental Health, the study indicated that the prevalence of mental health concerns is nearly equal to that of respiratory and cardiovascular complaints, surpassing infections, injuries, digestive health, skin conditions, urological problems, and sensory issues. Led by Avshalom Caspi, the Edward M. Arnett Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, the researchers examined over 350 million primary care visits involving 4.8 million people from January 2006 to December 2019, as recorded by the Norwegian government. Caspi noted that 12 per cent of all encounters with primary care physicians were for mental health problems, i.e. more than 40 million mental health visits out of the total.
