There's a new type of sauna that's only relatively recently appeared on the market. Conventional saunas use electrical or wood stoves to heat the air, but infrared saunas, a newer type of sauna, use infrared heaters as their heat source.

Although qualitatively speaking the health benefits offered by infrared sauna are similar to those of conventional saunas, the use of infrared rays is believed to enhance these benefits and lend additional advantages as compared to conventional saunas.

Modern saunas can be divided into two basic styles: conventional saunas that warm the air or infrared saunas that warm objects. Infrared saunas may use various materials in their heating area such as charcoal, active carbon fibers and other materials.
