Johnson & Johnson said on Wednesday (January 18) that it was pulling the plug on a late-stage global trial of an HIV vaccine after the shot was found ineffective
at preventing infections.
The failure of the trial marks yet another setback in the search for a vaccine against a virus known to mutate rapidly and find unique ways to evade the immune
system, and comes more than a year after another of J&J's HIV vaccine failed a study.
"It's not the outcome we had hoped for, unfortunately," said a spokesperson for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a J&J partner in the trial.
"The development of a safe and effective HIV vaccine has been a considerable scientific challenge, but we will learn from this study and continue forward."
The trial involved administering two different types of a shot, which uses a cold-causing virus to deliver the genetic code of HIV, spread over four vaccination
visits in a year. J&J used similar technology for its COVID-19 vaccine.
The study, which began in 2019, was conducted at over 50 sites and included about 3,900 gay men and transgender people - groups that are considered vulnerable to
the infection.

There has been extensive national media coverage today (August 11) on how medicine shortages have forced patients to visit multiple pharmacies to get their
prescriptions filled or return to their GP to be prescribed alternative drugs.
These media reports have been based on a survey involving more than 1,500 pharmacists in the UK, in which over a half of those polled said that their patients'
health had been put at risk in the last six months.
In response to a query from Pharmacy Business, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said it monitors the medicines supply chain closely to prevent any
shortages and acts swiftly when any issue arises.
A DHSC spokesperson told Pharmacy Business: "We take patient safety extremely seriously and we routinely share information about medicine supply issues directly

The Conservative Party Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak visited Bassett Pharmacy in Southampton on Wednesday (Aug 24) - the pharmacy that used to be

Giving his reaction to the visit, National Pharmacy Association (NPA) chief executive Mark Lyonette said: "If Rishi Sunak is serious about NHS reform, he would do
well to start with a 'pharmacy first' approach to prevention and treatment which has the potential to transform the way people access NHS care.
"That can only happen with a sustained increase in funding for our sector, which is facing much harder times now than it ever did when Mr Sunak's parents owned a
pharmacy years ago."

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) Fitness to Practise Committee has removed a pharmacy technician from Register after been found guilty of possessing
'indecent photographs of a child'.
Graeme Arthur, a pharmacy technician first registered with GPhC on 1 September 2019, under the registration number 5039154, was found guilty at Peterlee
Magistrate's Court in August 2022. He received an 18-month Community Order, and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 5 years, He was also ordered to
undertake a period of rehabilitation activity for 40 days.
In the remote video linking hearing held on 2 - 3 May, the Fitness to Practise Committee found Arthur's fitness to practise to be currently impaired on grounds of
protection of the public and in the wider public interest of declaring and upholding the Standards of the profession and maintaining public confidence in the
reputation of the profession.
The committee considers this to be a serious conviction for an offence which has included possession of the most serious category of images of sexual abuse of
children. It said: "Although Mr Arthur had no direct contact with the children concerned, the nature of the abuse is that it thrives on the demand from those
who search for and view the images online. As such, children come to actual harm indirectly through the activity of someone viewing and possession of images of
sexual abuse."

Amgen Inc sued Novartis AG's Sandoz in a federal court in the United States on Monday (May 1), accusing Sandoz's proposed versions of its multibillion-dollar
bone-strengthening drugs Prolia and Xgeva of infringing several patents.
Amgen asked the New Jersey court to block Sandoz's biosimilars of the drugs until its patents expire. One of the patents named in the complaint does not expire
until 2037.
Sandoz declined to comment on the lawsuit on Tuesday. Novartis, which is also named in the complaint, is preparing to spin Sandoz off into a standalone company
