Thousands of people in Britain infected with HIV and hepatitis C through contaminated blood transfusions will receive a compensation payment decades after
the scandal, the government announced on Wednesday (August 17).
The payment of £100,000 ($121,000) to each victim is an interim one after Brian Langstaff, the chairman of a public inquiry into the long-running scandal, last
month recommended making immediate payouts before waiting for an ongoing inquiry to conclude.
The former High Court judge said that the "moral case for compensation is beyond doubt".
The government said the tax-free payments, to survivors of the scandal and bereaved partners of the thousands estimated to have died from the contaminated blood,
would be made by the end of October.
Thousands of people with haemophilia contracted hepatitis C and HIV after receiving blood transfusions, mainly from the United States, through the NHS in the 1970s,
1980s and 1990s.
Due to a shortage of blood products in Britain, the NHS bought much of its stock from US suppliers whose donors, including prisoners and other groups at high risk of
infection, had been paid for their blood.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has cautioned people to stop using certain eye gels, highlighting a potential risk of
microbial contamination that can cause an infection.
As a precaution, the agency on Friday announced recall of specific batches of carbomer-containing lubricating eye gels branded Aacarb, Aacomer and Puroptics,
which are generally used to relieve the symptoms of dry eye.
Burkholderia cenocepacia is suspected to have caused the microbial contamination, and the issue was raised after an ongoing investigation conducted by UK Health
Security Agency (UKHSA) identified a small number of cases of infection.
Investigations are on to determine if there is a link between these products and the infections which have been identified.
Meanwhile, retailers have been told to withdraw the affected products, and users are asked to return their product to the place of purchase immediately.
A person in England has been diagnosed with a rare viral monkeypox infection thought to be linked to travel to West Africa, health authorities said at the weekend (May 7).
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said in a statement the case, in a person who had recently traveled to Nigeria, was being treated at an expert respiratory infectious disease unit at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London.
"It is important to emphasise that monkeypox does not spread easily between people and the overall risk to the general public is very low," said Colin Brown, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA.

An ear infection affects the middle and inner ear mainly. Hearing is affected because sounds cannot travel through an ear that is full of fluids. Constant fluid in the middle ear and chronic otitis media can reduce a child's hearing at a time that is critical for speech and language development.
Doxycycline and TMP/SMX may be much better choices for acute bronchitis. Amoxicillin is far preferable for ear infections or sinusitis. For streptococcal pharyngitis, penicillin and cephalexin are still the drugs of choice.

Cerebral Palsy means 'brain paralysis'and it stands for CP. CP is a disability that affects movement and body position.Cerebral Palsy comes from brain damage that happened before the baby was born, at birth, or as a baby. The whole brain is not damaged, only parts of it, mainly parts that control movements. Once damaged, the parts of the brain do not recover, nor do they get worse. However, the movements, body positions, and related problems can be improved or made worse depending on how we treat the child and how damaged his or her brain happens to be. The earlier it start, more improvement can be made.

Lapses in strategies to tackle COVID-19 this year continue to create the perfect conditions for a deadly new variant to emerge, as parts of China witness a
rise in infections, the head of the World Health Organization said on Friday (December 2).
The comments by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mark a change in tone just months after he said that the world has never been in a better position
to end the pandemic.
"We are much closer to being able to say that the emergency phase of the pandemic is over, but we're not there yet," Tedros said on Friday.
The global health agency estimates that about 90% of the world's population now has some level of immunity to SARS-COV-2 either due to prior infection or vaccination.
"Gaps in testing … and vaccination are continuing to create the perfect conditions for a new variant of concern to emerge that could cause significant mortality,"
Tedros said.
COVID-19 infections are at record highs in China and have started to rise in parts of Britain after months of decline.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will jointly launch a new study to gather data on COVID-19 this winter.
The Winter COVID-19 Infection Study (WCIS) will run from November 2023 to March 2024, involving up to 200,000 participants, UKHSA has said on Monday (October 2).
UKHSA previously commissioned the Coronavirus Infection Survey (CIS), conducted by the ONS in collaboration with scientific study leaders from Oxford University,
analysing more than 11.5 million swab tests and 3 million blood tests from April 2020 to March 2023.
Meanwhile, the Winter CIS study involves conducting up to 32,000 lateral flow tests weekly, providing vital insights into COVID-19 prevalence in the broader
community. The sample will be structured to broadly reflect key population characteristics.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has published the latest national surveillance data on antibiotic prescribing and resistance.
The English surveillance programme for antimicrobial utilisation and resistance (ESPAUR) report showed an increase in antibiotic use in all settings
(apart from dental) in 2022.
According to the report, antibiotic prescribing rose by 8.4 per cent in 2022 compared with 2021, although the number remains below 2019 pre-pandemic levels.
"There are many reasons behind the increase in prescribing, one of which is likely related to decreased immunity and exposure to infections during the
COVID-19 pandemic that may have underpinned the increased transmission in co-circulating infections, namely: influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus
(RSV) and group A streptococcus (GAS)," the report stated.
People infected with monkeypox can isolate at home if they remain well enough, whilst following measures to limit close contact with others, the UK's health
security agency (UKHSA) said on Monday (May 30), part of guidance designed to curb the country's rise in cases of the viral illness.
More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in May, outside of Africa where the virus is endemic. The usually mild illness spreads
through close contact and can cause flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin lesions.
An additional 71 cases of monkeypox have been identified in England, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the UK as a whole to 179 since early May.
Scientists are looking into what might explain the unusual surge of cases, given most are not linked to travel.
The UKHSA indicated community transmission was occurring in the UK and said infected people should avoid contact with others until their lesions have healed and
the scabs have dried off.
Britain has started counting possible Covid-19 reinfections in its daily coronavirus data, changing its approach to reflect the increased number of people
catching the disease for a second time as the Omicron variant predominates.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) added around 840,000 cases to the cumulative total, taking it to 17.3 million coronavirus infections reported.
Britain's daily Covid statistics previously would only count people who had tested positive for the first time to avoid double-counting people who had received multiple positive test results for the same infection.
However, with variants such as Omicron leading to an increase in reinfections, the UKHSA said it would change its method to treat positive tests as separate infections if there was at least 90 days between test results. The change took effect on Monday (January 31).
"Reinfection remained at very low levels until the start of the Omicron wave. It is right that our daily reporting processes reflect how the virus has changed," said Steven Riley, UKHSA's Director General of Data and Analytics.
With higher than usual number of cases of scarlet fever, caused by invasive Group A streptococci (iGAS) infections being reported in children across the
country, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England David Webb has assured pharmacies of sufficient supply of antibiotics.
In a letter, shared by the PDA, Webb also urged the pharmacies to order antibiotic stocks sensibly.
"Local pharmacy teams may be experiencing a temporary interruption of supply of some relevant antibiotics due to increased demand. On a national level, sufficient
stock exists for the NHS," he said.
He said NHS is working closely with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and has taken actions to help ensure medicines continue to be available.
He explained that the supplies of antibiotics for the treatment of Group A Strep, particularly phenoxymethylpenicillin presentations, have seen a surge in demand,
leading to potential constraints at certain wholesalers and pharmacies,
