A smattering of monkeypox cases in Britain has prompted authorities to offer a smallpox vaccine to some healthcare workers and others who may have been exposed,
as a handful more cases were confirmed in parts of Europe.
Monkeypox is a usually mild viral illness, characterised by symptoms of fever as well as a distinctive bumpy rash.
There are two main strains: the Congo strain, which is more severe - with up to 10 per cent mortality - and the West African strain, which has a fatality rate of
about one per cent
First identified in monkeys, the viral disease typically spreads through close contact and largely occurs in west and central Africa. It has rarely spread elsewhere,
so this fresh spate of cases outside the continent has triggered concern.
In the United Kingdom, nine cases of the West African strain have been reported so far.
There isn't a specific vaccine for monkeypox, but a smallpox vaccine does offer some protection, a UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) spokesperson said.
Data shows that vaccines that were used to eradicate smallpox are up to 85 per cent effective against monkeypox, according to the World Health Organisation.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially declared the mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and an increasing number of
African countries as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).
This decision follows the guidance of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met on Wednesday (14 August 2024) to review data from WHO and
affected countries.
Considering the potential for the virus to spread further within African countries and potentially to other continents, the experts identified the upsurge
of mpox as a PHEIC.
A key factor in the declaration was the emergence and rapid spread of a new virus strain, clade 1b, in the DRC last year.
While there has been a recent increase in mpox cases in the UK, no Clade 1 mpox cases have been confirmed so far, according to the UK Health Security
Agency (UKHSA).
Cancer is a growing reality for millions of Africans. Across the continent, the numbers are rising. Breast cancer alone accounted for 129,400 cases in women last year, and cervical cancer added another 110,300. Together, these two cancers represent nearly 30% of all diagnoses.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United Kingdom. However, Macmillan revealed that prostate cancer diagnoses were down 29 per cent
between 2019 and 2020, meaning men weren't seeing their GPs to begin to get diagnosed. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to spot any symptoms and get checked,
as an early diagnosis can help not only increase survival rates, but also offer a more varied choice of treatment options.
As community pharmacy teams play a fundamental role in educating men who may be concerned about their health it vital to maximise trusted relationship with patients,
and it is crucial that pharmacists have access to the correct resources to direct men to seek prostate cancer guidance.
Prostate cancer often affects men who are over the age of 50. Those who are at a higher risk of prostate cancer also include those of African-Caribbean family
descent, if there has been a family history of the cancer, and poor weight and diet.

prostate cancer.

Customs officials at Mundra port in Gujarat's Kutch district, India, recently seized approximately 6.8 million Tramadol tablets valued at Rs 110 crore
(around GBP 10.2 million).
The tablets were discovered in two export containers bound for Sierra Leone and Niger in West Africa.
Tramadol, an opioid pain medication, was classified as a psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) in 2018 and
its export is now restricted.
This synthetic opioid drug has gained notoriety in recent times as the "Fighter Drug" after it was reported that ISIS fighters used it to stay awake for long
hours, said a PIB release on Monday.
It is reportedly in high demand in African nations like Nigeria, Ghana, etc.
The Mundra Customs seizure is one of the largest seizures of Tramadol since it was notified under the NDPS Act, said the release.
