Gut bacteria may have a role in type 2 diabetes - 0 views

  •
One type of bacteria found in the gut may contribute to the development of Type 2 diabetes, while another may protect from the disease, according to early results from an ongoing, prospective study led by investigators at Cedars-Sinai. The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Diabetes, found people with higher levels of a bacterium called Coprococcus tended to have higher insulin sensitivity, while those whose microbiomes had higher levels of the bacterium Flavonifractor tended to have lower insulin sensitivity. Mark Goodarzi, the director of the Endocrine Genetics Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, California, is leading an ongoing study that is following and observing people at risk for diabetes to learn whether those with lower levels of these bacteria develop the disease. "The big question we're hoping to address is: Did the microbiome differences cause diabetes, or did diabetes cause the microbiome differences?" said Goodarzi, who is the senior author of the study and principal investigator of the multicenter study called Microbiome and Insulin Longitudinal Evaluation Study (MILES).

Pfizer:Antibiotic combo can treat superbug infections - 0 views

  •
Pfizer said on Thursday (June 1) data from late-stage trials showed its experimental combination of antibiotics was effective in treating deadly infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. Deaths from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, also known as superbugs, have been on the rise globally, and health regulators have called for the development of newer treatments as resistance to older antibiotics grows. The late-stage studies compared the experimental combination of the antibiotics aztreonam-avibactam (ATM-AVI) and existing generic drug metronidazole with a combination of two older antibiotics - meropenem and colistin - to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections and types of hospital-acquired pneumonia. Hospital-acquired pneumonia occurs in patients at least two to three days after being admitted, or in those who have life-threatening lung infections with high mortality rates and who are on mechanical breathing machines. Pfizer said the data from the studies shows the antibiotic combination of ATM-AVI is effective and well-tolerated in treating infections caused by gram-negative bacteria. The cure rate in patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections with Pfizer's combination therapy, along with existing generic drug metronidazole, was 76.4%, versus 74% using the other antibiotics.

Deadly Outbreak: Contaminated Eye Gels Spark Bcc Crisis - 0 views

  •
The outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) in the UK, which is associated with contaminated eye gels imported from India, has led to the death of one person, and many others falling ill, according to a government report. Bcc is a group of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are widely found within the environment. Although it rarely causes infection, it can result in severe ones in individuals with compromised immune systems and those living with cystic fibrosis, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said. Between January 2023 and February 2024, there were 52 confirmed and six probable cases across the UK linked to the bacteria outbreak, as revealed in the Health Protection Report published by UKHSA. Forty-one of these cases were hospital inpatients, 38 of which were in critical-care settings. Twenty-five cases were considered to have "clinically significant infections attributable to Bcc", out of which 11 had eye infections, nine had respiratory infections and four had bacteremia (bacteria entering the bloodstream). Two individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) were infected, and while one was treated, the other died, with the report indicating Bcc infection to have "contributed to the death."

Pharmaceutical Hygiene: The Role of Sanitary Clamps in UK - 0 views

  •
In the pharmaceutical industry, maintaining strict hygiene standards is paramount to ensure the safety and efficacy of products. One of the critical components in achieving this goal is the utilization of sanitary clamps. These clamps play a vital role in securing various connections within pharmaceutical equipment, preventing contamination, and upholding sterile conditions. In this article, we delve into the reasons why sanitary clamps are indispensable for maintaining hygiene in pharmaceutical settings. Contamination Prevention Sanitary clamps serve as a crucial barrier against contamination in pharmaceutical environments. With stringent regulations governing pharmaceutical manufacturing, any compromise in hygiene can result in significant consequences, including product recalls and compromised patient safety. Sanitary clamps are designed to create secure and airtight connections between pipes, hoses, and other components, effectively sealing off potential entry points for contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and particulate matter. By minimizing the risk of contamination, these clamps help pharmaceutical companies uphold the integrity of their products and adhere to regulatory standards. Moreover, the design of sanitary clamps ensures ease of cleaning and sterilization, further reducing the risk of cross-contamination between batches. Unlike traditional fastening methods that may harbor bacteria or residue, sanitary clamps feature smooth surfaces and minimal crevices, making them easier to sanitize. This not only enhances hygiene but also promotes efficiency in the cleaning process, allowing pharmaceutical manufacturers to maintain high levels of cleanliness without compromising production timelines. Overall, by preventing contamination and facilitating thorough cleaning, sanitary clamps play a crucial role in safeguarding the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products.

Gum Disease to Increased Stroke Risk in Young Adults : Study - 0 views

  •
Researchers from King's College London and the University of Helsinki have identified a link between periodontitis (gum disease) and cryptogenic ischemic stroke, which causes a blockage in the blood vessel supplying blood to a region of the brain. The findings, recently published in the Journal of Dental Research, emphasise severe gum disease as a risk factor for young-onset stroke, particularly in patients with no other identifiable risk factors. Dr. Susanna Paju, Periodontology Specialist from the University of Helsinki, led the study in collaboration with Dr. Svetislav Zaric, Clinical Lecturer in Periodontology from King's College London. Dr. Zaric explains the implications of their research: "Stroke remains the second leading cause of death globally. Strikingly, the incidence and prevalence of ischemic stroke have been increasing in the younger population during past decades," she said. "Periodontitis, which involves deep inflammation of the gums due to bacteria under the gumline, can lead to systemic effects as bacteria enter the bloodstream and affect other parts of the body," she added.

Antibiotic may help avoid resistance to dangerous superbugs - 0 views

  •
Researchers at at an Australian university have developed a new form of antibiotic that can be swiftly re-engineered to avoid resistance to dangerous superbugs. The antibiotic, which was developed by PhD candidate Priscila Cardoso and major supervisor Dr Celine Valery from RMIT's School of Health and Biosciences, has a basic architecture that allows it to be generated quickly and cheaply in a lab. The antibiotic, Priscilicidin, has tiny amino acid building blocks that allow it to be tailored to combat various types of antimicrobial resistance. With the World Health Organization calling antimicrobial resistance "one of the top ten global public health threats facing humanity", developing new antibiotics has become more urgent than ever. Professor Charlotte Conn, one of Cardoso's PhD supervisors, said given that urgency, Priscilicidin was an exciting breakthrough for public health. Priscilicidin is a type of antimicrobial peptide. These peptides are produced by all living organisms as the first defence against bacteria and viruses.

Water Filtration:6 Major Reasons Why Businesses Should Filter - 0 views

  •
Water is the lifeblood of any business - employees must stay hydrated and productive, and it's needed for many industrial processes. That's why businesses need to filter their water and remove any harmful contaminants. Here are six major reasons why businesses should filter their water. HEALTH HAZARDS Unfiltered water can contain harmful contaminants like bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause serious health problems. If these contaminants get into the water supply, they can make employees sick and lead to absenteeism. In some cases, these contaminants can even be deadly. Therefore, if you notice that your employees are getting sick more often, it could be because of the water they're drinking. Other signs could be discolored water, strange taste or odors, or water that contains sediment. Regular water testing and investing in a quality water filtration system can help to remove these contaminants and keep your employees healthy. On the other hand, there are regulations and guidelines in place to make sure that the water supplied to businesses is safe. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates public drinking water, and businesses are required to follow these regulations.

Alarming Surge in Antibiotic-Resistant Shigella Cases Among GBMSM - 0 views

  •
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has raised alarm over rising cases of extensively antibiotic-resistant Shigella infections, mainly in gay, bisexual, and other men who have physical relationship with men (GBMSM). There has been a 53 per cent increase in cases since the beginning of 2023, mostly driven by a cluster of antibiotic resistant strain called Shigella sonnei, with 97 cases reported this year until November, compared to just four cases last year. According to UKHSA, Shigella sonnei infections are difficult to treat as the strain does not respond to the antibiotics typically used to treat the bacteria. While it has been found across England, cases are concentrated in London (45), the North West (21) and South East (12). Shigella is an infectious gut infection that can cause symptoms like diarrhoea (sometimes mixed with blood), stomach cramps and fever, which are commonly mistaken for food poisoning.
