A 14-year-old heart transplant campaigner visited Phoenix UK's headquarters in Runcorn recently to raise awareness of the importance of organ donations.
The visit by Max Johnson, founder of 'Max and Keira's law', along with his mother Emma, coincided with the launch of Phoenix UK's partnership with the British
Heart Foundation (BHF) in which the pharmaceutical provider committed to set a donation goal of raising £20,000 by June 2023 for the heart charity.
Max and Emma met with Phoenix UK's employees and gave a talk on the importance of the work they have carried out on behalf of BHF.
Max, who was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy when he was eight years old, also shared his own story. His life was saved when he was gifted with Kiera Ball's
heart - a nine-year-old girl from Devon who died in a car accident.
Max and his family campaigned tirelessly to change the law in England in favour of an opt-out system for organ donation since he was 'gifted' his new heart. 'Max
and Keira's Law' passed in May 2020.
The Pharmacists' Defence Association (PDA) has called on pharmacy employers and pharmacists organisations to make donations towards the Pharmacist Support charity in the new year.
The association has urged them to donate £1 per pharmacist employee or member to the charity group to increase its funding from 2022 onwards.
Pharmacist Support, an independent charity, provides a variety of support services to pharmacists and their families, former pharmacists and pharmacy students in Great Britain.
It provides support through twelve sessions of fully funded counselling topharmacists, students, or trainees.
Since 2018, the association has donated more than £150,000 to the charity, in turn supporting its members who additionally seek assistance from Pharmacist Support.
John Dawson, the founder and former CEO of Alliance Pharma, has donated £5million to the University of Sunderland towards the creation of a new drug
research centre.
The donation - the biggest in the university's history - will create the John Dawson Drug Discovery and Development Research Institute to improve health and
wellbeing of millions of people worldwide.
The new centre has been named after the pharmaceutical entrepreneur and Sunderland graduate who, alongside wife Sam, has provided the funding.
He and Sam were on Thursday (April 20) joined by specially invited guests from across the region's health, education, and business communities, to launch the
Institute housed in the University's Sciences Complex.
Unveiling a plaque inside the building, John said: "It's an absolute honour and privilege to be able to launch the new Drug Discovery and Development Research
Institute at the University of Sunderland today.
"It's been wonderful to be back on the campus and see the incredible developments that have taken place since I studied pharmacy here more than 50 years ago.
"I was immediately impressed at what has been achieved in that intervening half-century and I've been delighted to assist the University continue its development,
particularly in the health arena.
"I hope the launch of this institute will mark the next phase in the University's evolution and I'm very much looking forward to working with the team as they bring
their projects to fruition."
Loughborough-based generic and branded pharmaceutical manufacturer Morningside Pharmaceuticals has donated almost 60,000 packs of essential medicines to communities impacted by the war in Ukraine.
The donation, which includes 1.29 million doses, was made after the company's founder and chairman, Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, spoke with the Ukrainian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Vadym Prystaiko, at a business event in London.
Dr Kotecha, who was also recently appointed a deputy lieutenant of Leicestershire, said: "The heartbreaking situation in Ukraine has touched us all, and like so many people in the United Kingdom, we've been keen to do everything we can to help the victims of this terrible conflict."
The large shipment of medicines has been transported in a secure and temperature controlled environment via Morningside's logistics partner to the embassy's distribution hub in Poland. From there the medicines will be supplied to hospitals, healthcare centres and patients throughout Ukraine including the regions hardest hit by the Russian invasion.
Bristol-based Invatech Health has announced that it is fully funding the development of a new medical centre for families displaced by war and disaster in
Northern Syria.
The company has donated £54,000 to Action for Humanity for the medical centre, which would be part of a new village being constructed by the NGO, which provides
clean water food, shelter, healthcare and education for millions of Syrians.
According to the technology company, their donation is one of the charity's largest ever single donor contributions.
The new village is set to accommodate 750 families, offering newly constructed homes, each featuring two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

Well Pharmacy, a subsidiary company of Bestway Group is donating US$400,000 worth of medicines to help the victims of those impacted by the recent flooding in
Pakistan.
The Bestway Group has raised funds to the tune of $2.3 million, which will be deployed urgently on the ground in Pakistan.
The monies raised has been pledged to build homes (or shelters) for 5,000 families, provide usable water for more than 100,000 individuals and provide food and
medical supplies to over 20,000 people.

650 guests including the Lord Chancellor, the Deputy State Bank of Pakistan, UK Cabinet Ministers, and Members of Parliament in addition to leading City' figures

The Lord Chancellor Rt Hon Brandon Lewis MP said that the British Government has committed funds of £16.5 million for Pakistan and we are dealing with wider climate
change issues as well and we are committing to that effort.
