Mexiletine hydrochloride: MHRA recalls 50,100 & 200 mg tab - 0 views

  •
Three batches of Mexiletine hydrochloride 50mg, 100mg and 200 mg hard capsules manufactured by Clinigen Healthcare has been recalled. Pharmacists are urged to quarantine the said batches and return it to the supplier by or before 12 August. Clinigen Healthcare Ltd has initiated a recall of three batches of Mexiletine hydrochloride hard capsules due to a potential risk of under dose or overdose, which could have consequences for the safety of patients. The manufacturer has confirmed that no alternative batches of Mexiletine hydrochloride 50mg, 100mg or 200mg hard capsules will be available until later in the year, therefore the recall of these batches from patients should only be considered where patients have access to appropriate alternative products. See below for more information on resupplying patients with alternative products. "Patients should be advised not to stop any treatments without consulting their relevant healthcare professional. The risks of suddenly stopping medication for ventricular arrhythmias is higher than the potential risk presented by too much or too little of the active ingredient in the capsule."

CMA fines Pfizer and Flynn £70 million for inflating price - 0 views

  •
Britain's competition watchdog has fined pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Flynn £63 million and £6.7 million respectively for allegedly breaking competition law and illegally profiting from the sale of an anti-epilepsy drug. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that the two companies colluded to sell phenytoin sodium capsules, previously known as Epanutin, at "unfairly high prices" for over four over years between 2012 and 2016. The annual costs of the capsules for the NHS increased from £2 million in 2012 to approximately £50 million the following year. CMA has accused Pfizer of charging, over four years, prices between 780 per cent and 1,600 per cent higher than what was fixed previously for the medicine used to prevent life-threatening epileptic seizures. Pfizer supplied the drug to Flynn, which then sold the capsules on to wholesalers and pharmacies at a price between 2,300 per cent and 2,600 per cent higher than the prices previously charged by Pfizer.

Is Kratom Right For You? Health Benefits And Considerations - 0 views

  •
Maybe you've heard the term kratom in passing. Maybe you know a little bit about what people say about it but want to do your own research before taking the leap yourself. The following will explore some of the top health benefits of kratom as well as some factors to keep in mind when deciding whether kratom is right for you or not. Kratom is a herbal extract that comes from a type of evergreen tree called Mitragyna speciosa that is native to Southeast Asia. Kratom leaves can be chewed, or they can be dried and swallowed, or brewed into tea. Powdered and liquid supplements are also available on the market. WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE KRATOM? 1. LOW DOSAGE 2. MEDIUM DOSAGE 3. HIGH DOSAGE Kratom has another important effect that probably doesn't apply to everyone equally. Kratom has been used to ease the experience of cutting back on opiates or quitting opiates by minimizing the symptoms of withdrawal. This being said, kratom itself does produce good feelings and bind to opiate receptors in the brain, which means that if you're someone who is susceptible to addiction, you might want to be cognizant of your use and dosage.

New Alopecia Treatment - Litfulo: A Hopeful Solution - 0 views

  •
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has authorised a new drug today (1 November) to treat severe alopecia areata. Litfulo is the new hard capsule medicine with a recommended dosage of just 50 mg per day. It contains an active ingredient, ritlecitinib, an enzyme inhibitor treatment for patients over 12 years. Ritlecitinib works by reducing the activity of enzymes in the body called JAK3 and TEC kinases that cause hair follicle inflammation. This reduction in inflammation leads to hair regrowth in patients with alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease, where the body's own immune system attacks hair follicles leading to hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body.

RPS:Government to allow pharmacists to amend prescriptions - 0 views

  •
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has urged the government to amend medicines legislation to allow pharmacists to make minor amendments to a prescription without any protocol being needed. RPS wants to see a change in the law that makes the whole process of supply of medicines easier and quicker, enabling pharmacists to use their knowledge and expertise in medicines to better support patients. "At present a prescription can only be changed by a prescriber, which causes unnecessary workload for GPs and delays for patients," said RPS. RPS President Professor Claire Anderson said: "We want to see all pharmacists across the UK able to supply a different quantity, strength or formulation of a medicine (for example changing capsules to tablets) when required, to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy and the need for an SSP to be developed, signed and authorised by a Minister. In effect it would mean that pharmacists can help patients straight away - it would future proof the problem to some degree.
