Immigrants  have contributed greatly to the development and  cultural fabric of our country.  With an aging  population and a declining birth rate, Canada  (like most of the developed world) is increasingly  relying on immigration to enhance and grow its  workforce.

Members of racialized communities are growing as a proportion of Hamilton's population:  more than 13% of Hamiltonians identified themselves as a visible minority in the 2006 Census, representing an increase of 20% in this population from 2001.  The visible minority proportion of the city's population is significantly lower than the provincial average, but the gap is narrowing.

According to the 2011 census, Hamilton's population is now 519,949. Demonstrating the city's diversity, nearly one-quarter of the metropolitan area population of Hamilton is foreign-born. This makes Hamilton the Canadian city with the third highest proportion of foreign-born citizens after Toronto (44%) and Vancouver (38%).
