Keeping a newly disabled person in employment has a cost benefit of at least 2.5 times an employer's investment. This is a key finding of a report launched today (6 October) at the Health & Wellbeing Conference by the Royal National Institute of Blind People. The report outlines the business case for employment retention, showing how it can deliver financial benefits to the economy, to employers and to employees.

UK Law for websites - RNIB - 1 views

  • What level of compliance should I be achieving? We are not aware of any case which has been brought to court in the United Kingdom to date, so there is no case law guidance. However, we are currently suing BMI Baby over its failure to deal with the poor accessibility of its website. In any event, case law can only provide broad guidance - what websites have to do may vary from site to site. At RNIB, as outlined in our "Surf Right" website accessibility requirements, we recommend that websites exceed the basic level of compliance that the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) recommend in their Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 1.0 and aim for Double AA compliance. If you are a UK government website you should be aiming to achieve Double AA.

The EDS is currently being implemented by the vast majority of NHS organisations across England. The design and implementation of the EDS was independently evaluated in November 2012. Based on this evaluation and recent discussions with a selection of NHS organisations, it is proposed to refresh the EDS. Further engagement is planned to test what is being proposed.

  •
Australia enacted its Disability Discrimination Act in 1992, prior to the now ubiquitous World Wide Web. However, the "Maguire v. Sydney Olympic Games Organising Committee" High Court case in 2000 clearly demonstrated that the Australian Disability Discrimination Act applies in the online world.
