Sahara can become the largest source of world energy by 2050 - 0 views

  •
In this initial project, it will be important to demonstrate the possibility of manufacturing high-purity silicon from desert sand and constructing a high-temperature superconducting, long-distance, DC power supply system. The aim is to achieve a solar plant with annual capacity of at least 100 GW, which would truly help to solve the world's energy problem.

Delivering Health, Wealth and Water, Drip by Drip - 0 views

  • Solar-powered drip irrigation enhances food security in the Sudano–Sahel documents a field research project which found that: "solar-powered drip irrigation significantly augments both household income and nutritional intake, particularly during the dry season, and is cost effective compared to alternative technologies" Over the decades, irrigation has been shown to greatly increase agricultural productivity. Drip irrigation is spreading rapidly in Africa, with significant benefits. "Drip irrigation delivers water (and fertilizer) directly to the roots of plants, thereby improving soil moisture conditions; in some studies, this has resulted in yield gains of up to 100%, water savings of up to 40–80%, and associated fertilizer, pesticide, and labor savings over conventional irrigation systems" The solar-powered systems, however, look to offer the potential for even better results. From the study on impacts of PVDI systems it was reported: "The women’s agricultural group members utilizing the PVDI systems became strong net producers in vegetables with extra income earned from sales, significantly increasing their purchases of staples, pulses, and protein during the dry season, and oil during the rainy season. Finally, survey respondents were asked how frequently they were unable to meet their household food needs. Based on the frequency and most recent incident, households were assigned a food insecurity score ranging from zero (no problems during the previous year) to one (perpetually unable to meet food needs). This score changed significantly for project beneficiaries, as they were 17% less likely to feel chronically food-insecure. In short, the PVDI systems had a remarkable effect on both year-round and seasonal food access."

Several weeks ago, a group of researchers published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences documenting how relatively low-powered solar systems offer the potential to increase food supplies in impoverished arid regions while reducing demands for fertilizers and other costly (in fiscal and other terms) additives.

Changing World Technologies, Inc. - Who is changing the world? - Company Overview - 1 views

  • Changing World Technologies, Inc. (CWT) is at the forefront of revolutionizing renewable energy by changing the way in which organic waste materials are utilized, thereby providing a platform for sustainable development. What was once deemed as “waste” and transported to a landfill, can now be converted to a reliable stream of renewable energy, minimizing global warming, and improving our quality of life. CWT’s subsidiaries and affiliate companies include: Resource Recovery Corporation, Inc. (RRC) was incorporated in May 1996 for the purpose of developing and marketing an emerging technology known as the Thermal Depolymerization Process (TDP). Thermo-Depolymerization Process, LLC (TDP, LLC) was formed in June 1998 for the purpose of developing a demonstration facility for the TDP technology. Process refinements were accomplished over the next five years as the TDP evolved into a more directed Thermal Conversion Process (TCP). Renewable Environmental Solutions, LLC (RES) was formed in 2000 to develop the processing of agricultural waste and low-value streams throughout the world. RES, wholly owned by CWT, has the United States’ first operational bio-refinery situated in Carthage, Missouri, producing an indigenous supply of Renewable Diesel from agricultural and livestock wastes.

Onshore power for offshore platforms - 1 views

  •
Supplying power to offshore platforms from land-based plants could have a major impact on the industry's carbon emissions. Norway is the world leader in the laying of subsea cables to power offshore facilities, but a recent disagreement over the electrification of the Utsira High region has sparked a new debate over how and where to make use of this promising technology.
