The project uses an improved technology to extract energy from rock and fluids in the Earth's crust more efficiently. The technology, referred to as a supercritical binary geothermal cycle, is estimated to be more efficient than traditional geothermal binary systems, allowing lower-temperature geothermal resources to be used for power generation. Unlike coal-fired and natural gas-fired power generation plants, geothermal plants produce virtually no greenhouse gas emissions.

The 166MW Te Mihi geothermal power plant has been constructed by Contact Energy on the Wairakei geothermal steamfield in Taupo, New Zealand. Construction of the $750m plant was completed in May 2014. The Te Mihi project was part of a $750m programme to develop the Wairakei-Tauhara geothermal system.

In January this year Iceland's National Energy Authority announced it had created the world's first magma-based geothermal energy system after drilling 1.3 miles through the earth's crust and hitting magma - only the second time magma has ever been reached.
