Not only do you have a big choice of handset (getting bigger every day) but it's open source meaning developers the world over can make amendments and repost.
I've not seen the Nexus One yet, it seems to have very critical reviews. I bought the HTC Hero recently and am astounded. I can now make a receive calls through skype on my wifi connection, I've just installed copilot; a brilliant satnav software and regularly use a whole host of apps. The apps market is a little thin on the ground but it is growing at an exponential rate!
Despite the proprietary charger/USB cable that comes with the Hero, I should also mention that the port accepts a standard USB mini cable meaning my Garmin Nuvi charger fits it, as does my wife's phone charger, my camera charger, my external USB backup drive cable and many more.
Move over iPhone, Android is here to stay and it's community based open model is far superior :)
