companion to e-Research: Transformation in Scholarly Practice (Routledge, 2009) and includes material both supplementing and expanding what is contained in the book. The site contains background information, new research and resources, visualizations, and opportunity to post comments and contact contributors. It is a dynamic site in the sense that additions and revisions are frequently made
Report on a survey of "38 individuals at four prominent U.S. research universities," reflecting how researchers choose "adequate" rather than "optimal" information solutions and "use online tools and commercial
services related to their discipline rather than tools provided by their university." Concerns about long term data durability abound.
Excerpt: similarities and emerging differences between Generation Y and
older students in six broad areas:
* constraints on research;
* ways of searching for research information;
* research resources used;
* using library collections and services;
* using technology in research;

Elsevier Enriches Articles With Research Data Sets
Elsevier and PANGAEA (Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data) announced their next step in interconnecting the diverse elements of scientific research. Elsevier articles at ScienceDirect are now enriched with graphical information linking to associated research data sets that are deposited at PANGAEA.
Recently announced NSF requirement (that all grant proposal need to include a Data Management Plan (DMP) shows the importance of digital data as a foundation for the progress of science and replicability of research in the digital age. ..
The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is the first publisher to place transparent and comprehensive information about the usage and reach of published articles onto the articles themselves, so that the entire academic community can assess their value. We call these measures for evaluating articles 'Article-Level Metrics', and they are distinct from the journal-level measures of research quality that have traditionally been made available until now.
IU Bloomington School of Informatics and Computing associate professor Johan Bollen and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) will share the Mellon Foundation grant designed to build upon the Metrics from Scholarly Usage of Resources (MESUR) project that Bollen began in 2006
Metrics collected by reference management software are especially intriguing because they offer a measure of active interest without requiring researchers to do anything more than what they are already doing. Scientists collect the papers they find interesting, take notes on them, and store the information in a place that is accessible and useful to them
Paul Ginsparg Gets $882,610 Grant for arXiv Enhancement\nPaul Ginsparg, professor of physics and information science at Cornell University, has been awarded a $882,610 grant by the NSF for the Tools for Open Access Cyberinfrastructure project, which will enhance the popular arXiv repository. The grant was funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
This wiki collects information about tools and resources that can help scholars (particularly in the humanities and social sciences) conduct research more efficiently or creatively. Whether you need software to help you manage citations, author a multime
"Long-term preservation and stewardship of scientific data and research-related information are vitally important to future science and scholarship. Scientific data archives can offer capabilities for managing and preserving disciplinary and interdisciplinary data for research, education, and decision-making activities of future communities of users. Meeting the requirements for a trusted digital repository will help to ensure that today's collections of scientific data will be available in the future. A continuing self-assessment of a long-term archive for interdisciplinary scientific data is being conducted to identify the additional steps needed for it to become a trustworthy repository. Recommendations include a strategy for collaborative organizational sustainability, a model for submission and workflow to ingest interdisciplinary scientific data into a repository, and a plan for facilitating intra-organizational transfer between repositories."
WorldWideScience.org, a federated full-text database of scientific and technical research information published at least 70 cooperative countries, providing access to millions of deep web documents with only about a 4% overlap with general public search engines.
Digital libraries (DLs) are complex information systems and therefore demand formal foundations lest development efforts diverge and interoperability suffers. In this article, we propose the fundamental abstractions of Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies (5S), which allow us to define digital libraries rigorously and usefully.
