Integrated farming, popularly known as mixed farming is a new form of natural farming in which simultaneous agricultural activities are carried out. These activities will include a range of farming as well as animal rearing or husbandry activities. The underlying concept of integrated farming is to coordinate the waste products of each activity as raw material to cut down costs and to improve productivity. This form of farming is also highly effective since the raw materials are all natural and self procured than chemically manufactured or artificially made.

For instance, the byproduct of a crop can be used as fodder or feed for cattle or other poultry animals. The waste generated by the livestock can be used as manure for fertilizing the soil for crop production. When this production is repeated as a cycle, there is an overall improvement in the quality of both natural farming and poultry production. Integrated farming opens up multiple sources of revenue for farmers. They are no longer required to be solely dependent on industrial agriculture for their livelihood.

It gives them the financial freedom to pursue an additional source of revenue that will enrich their lives. Industrial farming usually contains the growing of sugarcane, rice, wheat, maize, etc. along with livestock rearing like cattle, pigs, sheep, fish, ducks, etc. This process helps in reducing the amount of external raw material requirement. The quantum of residue is cut down effectively leading to synergies in crop production and poultry farming. In other words, the residual waste of one activity is the raw material of another activity.

The biggest challenge of integrated farming is the lack of awareness and knowledge among farmers. The farmers are illiterate of the numerous advantages that integrated farming can derive to their livelihoods. Various national governments are now in the process of establishing training centers and assistance programs that enlighten farmers about how to improve crop production naturally through integrated farming. They are also offered scientific inputs based on study and analysis conducted by research institutions. Integrated farming if made a practice will aid in ushering a new millennium where there will food security.
