The UK Placename Finder is part of the suite of free internet-based tools provided by this Archaeology UK for the communities of field archaeologists, family historians and placename researchers. The internet-based database holds information on the names of more than 160,000 UK places and provides a number of methods for interrogating the dataset.

The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) is a distributed digital library with collections of georeferenced materials. ADL includes the operational library, with various nodes and collections, and the research program through which digital library architectures, gazetteer applications, educational applications, and software components are modeled, prototyped, and evaluated. ADL provides HTML clients to access its collections and gazetteer, and provides specific information management tools, such as the Feature Type Thesaurus for classing types of geographic features, as well as downloadable software code.

We have all found directories like Cyndi's List to be valuable assets in our family research efforts.  Unfortunately, these directories require lots of maintenance and since most of these are volunteer efforts, it can take weeks to get new sites included.

Imagine a giant transparency overlaying on top of all the web pages. Users can write on the transparency as they wish, as private notes or public comments. And they can read public comments on the transparency left by other readers of the same page, and hear their "two cents" and interact with them.
