Nickolas Muray - Flickr Commons George Eastman House - 0 views

  •
"Born in Hungary in 1892, Nickolas Muray immigrated to the United States in 1913, working first as a printer and then opening a photographic portrait studio in Greenwich Village in 1920. He became well known for his celebrity portraits, publishing them regularly in Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Ladies' Home Journal, and The New York Times. After 1930, Muray turned away from celebrity and theatrical portraiture, and became a pioneering commercial photographer, famous for establishing many of the conventions of color advertising. He is considered the master of the three-color carbro process. "

Open Library - 0 views

Open Library is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive, and is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library. We have a small team of fantastic programmers who have accomplished a lot, but we can't do it alone! This is an Open project - the software is open, the data is open, the documentation is open, and the site is open. Now it's your turn! Everyone can participate in this project, whether you're a programmer who wants to build on top of this data, a librarian who wants to add records of digitized books to her local catalog, or a lover of books who wants to make sure his favorites are well represented. Follow the links below to find out more about participating, or just start browsing around and add some book information!

From site: "One web page for every book ever published. It's a lofty, but achievable, goal. To build it, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a brand new database infrastructure for handling huge amounts of dynamic information, a wiki interface, multi-language support, and people who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and book data. To date, we have gathered about 30 million records (20 million are available through the site now), and more are on the way. We have built the database infrastructure and the wiki interface, and you can search millions of book records, narrow results by facet, and search across the full text of 1 million scanned books. The history of London [WorldCat.org] - 0 views

  •
Walter Besant was a novelist and historian, and his topographical and historical writings, ranging from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century, were probably best known through the detailed 10-volume Survey of London published after his death. This earlier single volume covers, in less depth, the whole period from prehistory until the 19th century. The book appears originally to have been written for boys, and, indeed, the chapters are called "Lessons". However, it is a very readable history and provides a fascinating insight into both London's past and the government of the City at the time the book was written (1894). (Summary by Ruth Golding) - from Librivox.org review of the audio version. Also available on Google Books.

The Rocks, Sydney - Flickr Commons Powerhouse Museum - 0 views

  •
These photos were taken in the area now known as The Rocks. Many of the street names have since changed and some areas were demolished to build the Bradfield Highway (and the Sydney Harbour Bridge). The City of Sydney Council publishes a guide to old Sydney street names which is useful in identifying many of these locations.

"Lookbackmaps is a network of neighborhood historians, historical photo enthusiasts, historians, book publishers and others who collaborate to map history.\n\nThrough the online digitization of high-resolution public photo collections and geotagging technology, Lookbackmaps creates collaborative, standardized views into the past.\n\n \n\nThere's something in being human that wonders what was here before us-who occupied this space, how did they live, what did they leave behind? By mapping the millions of historical photos available through public libraries and private collections on the web, we start to piece together the puzzle."

Wisconsin County Histories - 1 views

  •
This page provides free access to more than 80 standard histories of Wisconsin counties. Most of these volumes are several hundred pages long and include detailed accounts of individual cities, townships and villages, as well as biographical sketches of prominent residents. Most were published between 1850 and 1920. Every word on their 56,000 pages is searchable, so you can find specific descriptions of people, places, and events. Every volume can be downloaded to your own computer for free as a PDF file (to acquire the PDF when viewing a volume, open the drop-down at the upper left labeled "document description"). Because many of these books are very large, be patient when opening or downloading them. If you need help, use the link at the bottom of every page.

These themes include Economic Development, Law and Society, Native American Relations, Political Development, Race and Ethnicity, Settlement and Immigration, and Women and Gender.
