Captains of the Civil War by William Wood - Free eBook - 1 views

  •
Sixty years ago today the guns that thundered round Fort Sumter began the third and greatest modern civil war fought by English-speaking people. This war was quite as full of politics as were the other two--the War of the American Revolution and that of Puritan and Cavalier. But, though the present Chronicle never ignores the vital correlations between statesmen and commanders, it is a book of warriors, through and through.

ResearchBuzz :: Small Civil War Letters Archive at Baylor - 0 views

  • Baylor University has announced that a small archive of Civil War letters has been digitized and is now available at the Baylor University Library Digital Collections site. The collection consists of thirty-two letters, mostly between a soldier and his sweetheart. The letters have been both digitized and transcribed; from the front page of the collection you can browse the letters in chronological order. The next-to-last item is the burial receipt for John Coleman, who wrote most of the letters (he died in 1880) and the last item — a really nice touch — is a chronological transcription of all the letters, presented in a PDF file. Click on a letter and you’ll get a good-sized picture; a lot of them are tough to read however (especially the ones written on blue paper.) On the left nav you’ll have the option to view the document description (the letter itself), the page description, or the page and text. Choose the page and text option; you’ll get a good copy of the letter to browse but also a transcription in a popup window. The transcriptions aren’t perfect, but they’re very good. John Coleman is an interesting man. Melancholy, frustrated, worried about his girlfriend and family, occasionally bored, he mixes home and war news equally. His girlfriend writes back patiently, their letters often missing each other. The good transcriptions and the focus on two people make this a fascinating read. Well done Baylor.

Understanding Your Ancestors - 0 views

  •
The goal of this site is not to help you find your ancestors' names (although the Records section does contain a lot of how-to information). Instead, this site's goal is to help you understand your ancestors' lives - particularly those who lived in the 1700 and 1800s in Western Europe. For grandparents and even great-grandparents, you can often learn quite a bit about their lives by talking to people who knew them. However, once you get back several generations, the task becomes more involved. In most cases, the only evidence of these ancestors that survives is names and dates in basic records. Despite the lack of detail about your ancestors individually, there is a lot of information that can help you understand your ancestors' lives. By accessing this, you can gain important insights into their daily routines and most important life events. To find this information you have to do two things: first, look deeper into the records and second, look beyond your ancestor. I hope this site can help you do both of these.

Back in June of 2007, we began our first collaboration with a civic institution to facilitate giving people a voice in describing the content of a publicly-held photography collection. The key goals of this pilot project are to firstly give you a taste of the hidden treasures in the huge Library of Congress collection, and secondly to how your input of a tag or two can make the collection even richer. You're invited to help describe photographs in the Library of Congress' collection on Flickr, by adding tags or leaving comments.*

BLACKFIVE: Rome, GA Remembers - 0 views

  •
"I don't know about you, but I'm a history buff. And I'm particularly fascinated by WWII. Unfortunately we're losing our WW II vets at an alarming rate now and we're missing out some of the most fascinating history there is - the personal stories of those who were a part of that great effort. I was pleased to find out that one of the small cities here in Georgia, through its local newspaper, the Rome News-Tribune, has produced a very well done set of videos featuring local WW II vets along with their stories. It is very similar to Ken Burns "The War" but on a much more local level. It's fascinating and a very worthy addition to the oral histories of WW II. There are 8 videos in the set and they're all worth the time to watch. But if you have to pick just one to watch, I'd suggest the one on Iwo Jima. Two Marines and a Navy Corpsman talk about that battle, what they saw, what they did and how it effected them and their lives. It is worth the few minutes it takes. If anyone knows about more of these projects that are available on line, I'd love to know about them so I can feature them (mcq51atbellsouthdotnet)."

"Apollo 15 embarked in July of 1971 and was the fourth mission in which humans walked on the moon. Two astronauts, Commander David R. Scott and LM (Lunar Module) pilot James B. Irwin, are shown during their 4 days on the lunar surface. Shortly thereafter, the Apollo 17 mission landed, in December of 1972, and would be the sixth and final mission in which humans would roam the moon."

Tyrrell Collection - a set on Flickr - 0 views

  •
The Tyrrell Collection consists of 7903 glass plate negatives from the studios of Charles Kerry (1857-1928) and Henry King (1855-1923) who had two of Sydney's principal photographic studios in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection - an important record of city and country life - was bought by James R. Tyrrell in 1929 and sold in 1980 to Australian Consolidated Press who donated it to the Powerhouse Museum in 1985.

"The Yearling": Pre-production and Location Photographs of MGM's "The Yearling," 1939-1... - 0 views

  •
The photographs taken for pre-production of The Yearling document two significant aspects of Florida culture: the state's role in American film and the folklife of Florida "Crackers." The production company extensively documented existing farms in the area, preserving a glimpse of life in Florida before electricity and mechanized farming, before the development boom that accompanied interstate highways, theme parks, and urban sprawl in post-World War II central Florida.

Midwest Genealogy Center - MCPL - 1 views

  •
The Midwest Genealogy Center is one of the nation's preeminent resources for family history. The MGC features 52,000 square feet of space to house all the resources and technology genealogists need to research. Amongst its many features, the MGC houses a uniquely expansive circulating collection and almost completely open stacks. New technology is also a major attribute of the building. Microfilm reader-printers, two self-digitization stations, and significant database access allow researchers to use today's technology to assist their investigation.
