Google Cities in 3D Program - 0 views

  • Put your city on the 3D map Engage the public by featuring your city's buildings, landmarks and terrain on Google Earth. If your local government is like many around the world, you've invested in developing a 3D model representing buildings in your city's downtown--perhaps your entire jurisdiction. Or, maybe you haven't yet produced a 3D model, but you've collected the geospatial data necessary for producing a model. With Google's Cities in 3D Program, your local government can share this 3D data with the public by adding a model of your city to Google Earth. More than 350 million Internet users have turned to Google Earth to better understand and navigate their world.

Greensburg GreenTown - Sustainable Building Database - 0 views

  • 10'x10' cubes to showcase sustainable practices to visitors and the community. After meeting with GreenTown, The Green Club, and interested residents, students selected the preferred and most feasible models, and designed, built and delivered four cubes as a gift to the community. The cubes are located on the lot adjacent to the GreenTown office. The "Ice Cube" collects rainwater on the roof, purifies it through two ceramic filters, and dispenses the water through a conventional drinking fountain. The "Watering Can" showcases a composting toilet, solar hot water heater, and rainwater catchment system. The "Recycling Bin" demonstrates a small-scale wind turbine and provides information on how to sort recyclables. (Students from The Green Club assisted in the building of this cube at KSU.) The "Green Haus" showcases an array of eco-friendly insulation options that people can use in their homes or businesses.

The Program Behind the Young Australian of the Year - 0 views

  •
In 2008, Marita Cheng identified a problem: too few girls in engineering, the field of her passion. Deciding to do something about it, Cheng and a number of her peers formed Robogirls, a student club which would set up and run LEGO robotics competitions for girls' schools around Melbourne, with teams receiving training and support in the lead up to the completion. What started from there has now grown into an organisation introducing girls to engineering in schools not just across Australia but also in England, Ireland, Holland and New Zealand.  Robogirls' success has now earned Marita the 2012 Young Australian of the Year.

Abu Dhabi Arts Centre - Sculpture or Building? - 0 views

  •
In the construction and design industry, architecture is one of the most complex and multi-faceted sectors. As we have stated previously, it encompasses a whole range of broad and varying components, from mathematics to the currently trending biology. At its most basic root though, architecture deals with form. It is for this reason that architecturally designed buildings are able to become art forms as one of the industry's most artistically based facets. It only makes sense then, due to the crossover and widely varied field, that some buildings would share these sculpturally formed aspects more than others. One such building that is due for completion this year and is an example of the aforementioned form is architectural firm Zaha Hadid's Performing Arts Centre in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Designer Airport Home Away From Home - 0 views

  •
Helsinki's Vantaa airport is taking the saying 'making yourself at home' to heart with the interior design for their newest travellers' lounge. No matter how hard airport designers try to make these international, heavy trafficked areas romantic and luxurious, there is no doubting the dread that most of us feel on a 6 hour lay over or extended visit. While there can be no denying the luxuriousness of this interiorly designed space, what the designers have cleverly done is steer away from the clinical coolness of traditional airport lounges and thrown a knowing look back towards creature comforts. The aptly named 'Almost @ home' lounge features interior aspects that have been chosen to most correctly reflect a Finnish, or any, home.

Critics Hit Melbourne CBD Expansion - 0 views

  •
The announcement that Melbourne is set to receive one of its largest redevelopments on record has set the tongues of both the nation, and the globe, wagging. Finding even further international acclaim last year when it was deemed the World's Most Liveable City, Melbourne has seen a massive population surge, topping 85,000 new residents a year, causing both industry and government leaders to put together in a scheme which aims to perform the dual function of expanding and refurbishing the central Melbourne area. Much like Sydney's Barangaroo project, this latest CBD expansion is too large and high-impact to go unnoticed, for both positive and negative reasons.

Office Building Makes Perth Statement - 0 views

  •
Shaking up the Perth Skyline is a construction venture that brings together architecture acumen and functionality. A mix of these two parts can only create statement-making buildings. Developed by Leighton Properties, Stage One of the Kings Square development is set to have a substantial impact on the area both visually and in terms of market value with the project featuring as a major commercial venture in our most recent market analysis. After an unsettled 2011, its seems the construction giants are coming back in full force with a number of what promise to be statement making developments. The Kings Square development will be located on the former Perth Entertainment (PEC) site and will have a mixed-use function.

reality check: Imagination, fantasy, creativity, play and the 'real world' - 0 views

  •
but to read ... some convergence . Disengagement from the 'real world' is a common criticism of the discipline of architecture. With architects serving only 10-15% of the population and an even lower number in housing design, it is not difficult to understand the reasons for this critique. Conversely, architecture is also about imagination, creativity, play and fantasy-all activities promoted in architectural education, particularly design studio. Through this tutorial, we will try to understand whether architecture needs to touch base with the 'real world'. We will investigate what this mean for architecture and what is needed for imagination, fantasy and play to become tools in the search for a sustainable future.

Modern Maintenance Unit Solutions: Functional & Aesthetic - 0 views

  •
Towers are marketed as iconic places to work, live, visit and simply experience. It is important that they keep up their appearance. But the maintenance and cleaning of tall buildings can be a complex and costly business for building owners. Conversely, the integration of large and unsightly building maintenance units (BMU) can potentially compromise the architectural design integrity. Modern BMU designs combine the integration of efficient, cost effective cleaning and maintenance procedures with a solution that maintains the aesthetic ambitions. The cleaning technology options are numerous; from traditional abseiling techniques to self climbing cradles and davit arms, through to monorail systems and BMU machines.

Construction an Underwater Vision - 0 views

  •
The architecture industry has been in recent times exploring the growing world of artificial organisms. We have continuously covered this increasing trend, with examples of man-made organics in China and Singapore, varying from artificial islands, to trees and most recently coral reefs. It is no surprise that through the heightened levels of toxins and rubbish now running into our oceans everyday that certain sections of incredibly valuable, and aesthetically stunning underwater environments are dying. This is caused by various reasons including: the everyday home owner chemical run offs, the larger oil spills and natural disasters, but the fact is, we are killing it faster than it is able to grow back.

Melbourne's Architecture Maintenance Crackdown - 0 views

  •
Australian architecture authority Archicentre has sent out a warning to the national architectural community that aging city buildings must be properly maintained in light of a recent, and dangerous, building related incident. The accident occurred when a large slab of marble located on the façade of a commercial skyscraper on Melbourne's Collins Street became unattached and fell causing damage to both the building and side walk area, highlighting the potential threat that these unmaintained buildings hold. Defects that the architecture authority have urged building owners to crack down on include façade staining or discolouration, sealant failures, efflorescence, rising dampness and water penetration, corrosion, buckling or deflection and plaster of tile delamination, says Manager for Archicentre West Australia Maureen Letter.

The Vertical Farm Project - Agriculture for the 21st Century and Beyond | www.verticalf... - 3 views

  • Advantages of Vertical Farming Year-round crop production; 1 indoor acre is equivalent to 4-6 outdoor acres or more, depending upon the crop (e.g., strawberries: 1 indoor acre = 30 outdoor acres) No weather-related crop failures due to droughts, floods, pests All VF food is grown organically: no herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers VF virtually eliminates agricultural runoff by recycling black water VF returns farmland to nature, restoring ecosystem functions and services VF greatly reduces the incidence of many infectious diseases that are acquired at the agricultural interface VF converts black and gray water into potable water by collecting the water of evapotranspiration VF adds energy back to the grid via methane generation from composting non-edible parts of plants and animals VF dramatically reduces fossil fuel use (no tractors, plows, shipping.) VF converts abandoned urban properties into food production centers VF creates sustainable environments for urban centers VF creates new employment opportunities We cannot go to the moon, Mars, or beyond without first learning to farm indoors on earth VF may prove to be useful for integrating into refugee camps VF offers the promise of measurable economic improvement for tropical and subtropical LDCs. If this should prove to be the case, then VF may be a catalyst in helping to reduce or even reverse the population growth of LDCs as they adopt urban agriculture as a strategy for sustainable food production. VF could reduce the incidence of armed conflict over natural resources, such as water and land for agriculture
