    - wraparound eye protection to prevent tile pieces from flying into your eyes. - ear protection whilst operating any power tools. - knee pads for when you need to kneel on the floor.

If you are trying to remove a tile from a concrete slab, you will need to follow these instructions.

    1. Breaking up the tile; Take a sledgehammer and strike the tile in the centre, when the tiles are broken take a long handled floor scraper and slide it under the edge of the tiles and push forward, piece of the tile should peel off of the concrete. Scrape off any mastic residue. NOw, clean and vacuum the area and level the concrete.

2.Take a power-chipping hammer and first, break up the grout around a single tile and work your way under the tile itself to break it up. Once the first tile is removed, move on to the rest, your job will be a whole lot easier if you start at the edge rather than in the middle of a tile bed.

    3. Clean the area as best you can and then level the floor with concrete specifically designed to bond with the old concrete.

4.When removing a tile set on a backer board base it requires removing both the tiles and the backer board itself. Start at an edge or transition and remove the grout around a single tile and then break up and remove the tile. Remove a few tiles in a section so that you have an area about six inches by six inches of the broken backer board.

    5. Take a hammer and pulverize the backer board so that it can be removed and so you have an opening that reveals the sub floor. Slide a long handled floor scraper about six inches under the backer board but above the wooden sub floor, then push forward while lifting and turn the shovel. COntinue lifting the backer board by sliding the shovel under it until the board has all been removed. Repair any gouge made to the subfloor and then level it.

    6. Removing individual tiles is much easier than trying to remove an entire tile bed, using a grout saw remove all the grout that is arounmd the damage tile. Break the tile by carefully striking it with a cold chisel and a hammer, then slide a stiff bladed putty knfie under any pieces of tile that are stuck to the base and pry them off.

    7. Clean up and repair the base in preperation for installing the replacement tile. Now take the new tile and paste the whole back of the tile. THen place the tile into the free space where the old tile was and gently press down. Once this is done you can now take a sweeping brush and clean away dirt, dust or debris.

Getting rid of old tiles and their removal will require some heavy lifting to remove. The weight of the tiles being removed also depends on the width, length and thickness of tiles that are being removed. The average home owner will install a very thin tile for two reasons: the price and the self sticking back. These tiles are much lighter than the commercial grade - which is 1/8 in thickness.
