National Center for Supercomputing Applications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a state-federal partnership to develop and deploy national-scale cyberinfrastructure that advances science and engineering. NCSA operates as a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign but it provides high-performance computing resources to researchers across the country. Support for NCSA comes from the National Science Foundation, the state of Illinois, the University of Illinois, business and industry partners, and other federal agencies.
  • These centers were founded when a group of University of Illinois faculty, led by Larry Smarr, sent an unsolicited proposal to the National Science Foundation in 1983. The foundation announced funding for the supercomputer centers in 1985; the first supercomputer at NCSA came online in January 1986.
  • NCSA provides leading-edge computing, data storage, and visualization resources. NCSA computational and data environment implements a multi-architecture hardware strategy, deploying both clusters and shared memory systems to support high-end users and communities on the architectures best-suited to their requirements. Nearly 1,360 scientists, engineers and students used the computing and data systems at NCSA to support research in more than 830 projects. A list of NCSA hardware is available at NCSA Capabilities

  • Today NCSA is collaborating with IBM, under a grant from the National Science Foundation, to build [1] "Blue Waters," a supercomputer capable of performing 1 quadrillion calculations per second, a measure known as a petaflop. Blue Waters is due to come online in 2011.
  • The Mosaic web browser, the first popular graphical Web browser which played an important part in expanding the growth of the World Wide Web, was written by Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina at NCSA. Andreessen and Bina went on to develop the Netscape Web browser. Mosaic was later licensed to Spyglass,_Inc. which provided the foundation for Internet Explorer.
  • Initially, NCSA's administrative offices were in the Water Resources Building and employees were scattered across the campus. NCSA is now headquartered within its own building directly north of the Siebel Center for Computer Science, on the site of a former baseball field, Illini Field. NCSA's supercomputers remain at the Advanced Computation Building, but construction is now under way on a Petascale Computing Facility to house Blue Waters.

The NCSA is a great stepping stone to the evolution of Web 2.0.

danieltenner.com - What problems does Google Wave solve? - 1 views

  •
Excellent article on what Google wave is intended to be: a step up from email to allow for document collaboration. OK, now I finally get it. Seeing people talk about it replacing twitter, etc. I was like "nah - not with THIS" but seeing this blog post made the light go on - a must read for those who want to truly understand what google wave is for and to not get so hyper about what it isn't.

Important NEW technology for workflow software group and virtual communications. This would make a GREAT topic of video and perhaps we could try to get some invites for students to test out.

flatclassroom09-3 - Workflow Software - 4 views

Make sure that you justify how skype is part of workflow software. Also, you may want to pull out how the new skype lets you screenshare and record a movie of that and has all these productivity add ins to help workflow go.

This should be written like a wikipedia article in 3rd person so you'll want to rewrite this - also the current news section needs quite a few hyperlinks. How about all of the Google Docs and google type things that let you compute in "the cloud" -- also, things like timebridge let work flow around the world. Look at other things that help people work together like Elluminate, for example.

Not sure I understand this- but I will give you some examples here - how about SIS (student information systems) like SASSY and Powerschool that let teachers and administrators look at information from home or school and also let work flow from one person to another.

words and stuff - this is sort of written in jargon and needs to be cleaned up a bit. Also, there are no citations and hyperlinks - how do I know that this is true? Examples of workflow software here including the article I posted to the Flat Classroom group that show that the White house has gone "open source" with the whitehouse.gov website, using something called Drupal.

The items in Arts, Entertainment and Liesture need hyperlinks - although these are solid examples. Do you have a way to show what a storyboard looks like in this section?

Check the science environment and health section for adding hyperlinks and also sources.

  • Workflow software can be used many ways for a government as well as politics and employment. Working as a group simultaneously is very important to fulfill some kind of difficult work, like administrating works such as Microsoft Sharepoint . Since the work that big companies do is very complicated and intertwined over and over with the part that do not really seem to be related that much, workflow software is almost mandatory to practice. Facebook Users Hit "Dislike" Button for Timeline [STUDY] - 3 views

  •
We were just discussing this in our FCP class today. What do you think of the new FaceBook timeline? Some students felt it was a privacy concern and that it gives people the ability to "stalk" others easily. What do you think? This is a great current events topic for Topic 8, subtopic B in Social Networking/PLE's.
