A famous quote by the children's author Dr. Seuss says, "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you." I like to celebrate the individuality this quote is about in the classroom.
Individuality in the classroom should be celebrated year round. Create a "Youer than You" bulletin board in your classroom centered around the Dr. Seuss quote and your students. Take pictures, have students draw self portraits, or have them write their names in some way that represents them to go on the bulletin board. Then, beginning in August when school starts have the students do a different activity every month to celebrate their individuality. These are some ideas for the different months:
August- have the students draw and label a picture of their family, have the students answer a questionnaire about their favorite things, have the student write a short summary of their summer
September- choose partners, then have the students interview one another and write a short summary of the other person, have the students write about their favorite book
October- have the students draw the scariest creature they can imagine, have them write about their favorite Halloween costume
November- have the students draw their dream Thanksgiving feast, have them write about what their thankful for, have the students write about Thanksgiving plans
December- have the students write about their favorite holiday memory, have the students draw the best gift they've ever given to anyone
January- have the students make a new school year's resolutions list, have the students make goals for the entire new year, have the students reflect on the past year
February- have the students write about if they like Valentine's Day or not, have the students create a Valentine to display on the bulletin board
March- have the students write about St. Patrick's Day, have the students draw a character map of themselves
April- have the students write about the change of seasons, write a spring poem
May- have the students write about the joys of spring, have the students draw a picture of the changes from winter to spring
June- have the students reflect on the school year, write a review of you and the class, have them write on what they will do in the summer
Some ideas that work for any month- whichever month is his or her birthday have the students write about what he or she loves about birthdays, free writes, poems or songs describing his or her personality
This bulletin board will help the students share and recollect memories about themselves, and it will help you to get to know your students better.
