RBI Bars Payments Firms From Issuing Proprietary QR Codes - 0 views

  •
The Reserve Bank of India barred payment firms from issuing proprietary quick-response (QR) codes and asked them to switch to at least one interoperable QR code to improve ease of use by March 31, 2022. At present, only two interoperable codes exist: the Unified Payments Interface and Bhara. Payments firms also issue proprietary QR codes to merchants that accept digital payments from specific mobile applications, making them unusable for other customers. To curb this, the central bank said no new proprietary QR codes shall be launched by any payment system operator.

In the wake of COVID-19, QR codes are taking over the world. Will Visa and MasterCard s... - 0 views

  •
"Due to the COVID-19 induced economic crisis, small and medium-sized businesses, as well as buyers, will benefit from the spread of digital payment systems based on QR codes. It is in these groups that the main costs of the cashless world are now born. Large retail chains always have lower commission costs than smaller stores around the corner. Buying terminals for a small business is also a greater financial burden than for huge corporations. Regarding the effect of COVID-19 crisis on SMEs, QR codes are able to solve all current issues at once. If we analyze the potential through the prism of B2B, then payments can be digitized, simplified, streamlined and secured. In addition, QR codes give unbanked people access to digital non-cash payments, increasing the inclusivity of the financial industry. It's not just for the inhabitants of countries with developing economies, either, with the Financial Conduct Authority estimating that there are 1.3m people without a bank account in the UK alone, with those numbers concentrated in big cities."

Kiwi company Wych develops QR code donation tech for The Salvation Army - 0 views

  •
Wych have designed a donation model based on QR code technology. With the public already using QR codes, it provided a sensible solution to make it easy for generous kiwis to scan and donate. The generation of Wych's localized codes will allow 80 different areas around New Zealand to raise support through card based donations and the money will directly impact the community they are in. This is not an entirely new idea. I have seen it in operation by panhandlers in China on the AliPay and WeChat Pay platforms.

OFS and AUGENTIC GmbH reveal the design of the offline "Smart Banknote CBDC" prototype - 0 views

  •
"A smart banknote is a physical banknote that interacts with a CBDC solution and acts as a transitional device between traditional and CBDC based payment systems. A smart banknote can be used like a classic banknote; however, the owner can redeem his cold wallet (physical banknote) and transfer the note's value to a digital wallet by scanning the QR code with the private key. Our smart banknote includes a public and a private key represented by QR codes of which the private one is sealed. When the cover of the private key is removed, the QR code scanned, the value of the banknote can be transferred to a digital wallet. Conceptually after this procedure, the smart banknote cannot be transferred anymore."

Big techs, QR code payments and financial inclusion - 0 views

  •
Bank for International Settlements staff, using a dataset of around half a million Chinese firms that use the AliPay QR code-based mobile payment system, found that (i) the creation of a digital payment footprint allows firms to access credit provided by the same big tech company; (ii) transaction data generated via QR code generate spillover effects on access to bank credit; and (iii) there are positive effects of access to big tech credit on sales, including during the Covid-19 shock. The findings suggest that access to innovative payment methods helps micro firms build up credit history, and that using big tech credit can ease access to bank credit.
