YouTube - Khan Academy on the Gates Notes - 0 views

Sal Khan has been teaching via YouTube for over two years and has Bill and Melinda Gates helping him run his Academy.  This is a great model for instruction which frees up teachers to be me.  Students at  Bullis are watching the videos in advance of class to learn the skill, then come to class to practice.  The teacher spends his time coaching and helping. Advanced students work ahead and do enrichment.

This content could be really helpful for a workshop on digital photography. Especially if we're going to be doing any instruction for students using digital cameras and PhotoStory. Going over the "Rule of 3s" and white balance are really powerful before the students start collecting digital images.

No more lectures in class
  • How Backward Learning Works Roshan uses Microsoft PowerPoint to recreate problems from each chapter of the textbook. She turns on Camtasia and begins talking her way through the solution to the problem. "I'm just capturing my screen and my voice," she said. The recordings, which she edits and posts to a school-hosted site, a Camtasia-hosted site, as well as to iTunes, run between 10 and 30 minutes long. So far she's made 32 of them, covering six chapters in the book.

Go to the 6:00 minute mark and listen to what teachers are doing to "Flip" the classroom. I recently saw an article about Bullis school doing this same thing. A VERY interesting idea - one that would work great with... oh say ... iTouch or iPad mobile devices? BYOT
