Online learning is sweeping across America. In the year 2000, roughly 45,000 K-12 students took an online course. In 2009, more than 3 million K-12 students did. What was originally a distancelearning phenomenon no longer is. Most of the growth is occurring in blended-learning environments, in which students learn online in an adult-supervised environment at least part of the time. As this happens, online learning has the potential to transform America's education system by serving as the backbone of a system that offers more personalized learning approaches for all students.

The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. The Khan Academy's materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.

One of my erstwhile colleagues had pointed out the importance of keeping kids safe when they are online.  Digital education is not only about learning how to program or use a software; it's also a lot about knowing the who the villain among the bits and bytes could be. iRead is a group of teachers in Escondido Union School District dedicated to the idea that digital audio can be a powerful learning tool for all students. iRead will give you a chance to create meaningful, curriculum-centered audio projects with your students. Teachers are using digital audio tools (iPods, mics, Garageband, iTunes, Keynote, etc. and various accessories) to improve reading processes. Teachers meet on a monthly basis to exchange ideas and strategies. We started in 2006-07 by collecting data about fluency rates - this has been very promising.

Facebook has added an incredible complexity to our lives and relationships for one simple reason: it is in writing. The courts have always put things "in writing" in higher esteem above word of mouth. Now that we are inundated with video, text, and photographs and a set of complex relationships - we end up with things "in writing" that are distributed far beyond our true "friends" into  places that get us in trouble.

An updated look at the research and definitions around bullying and cyberbullying, this talk was presented to the Youth Online Safety Working Group assembled by National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Amanda's talk draws upon the work of the Pew Internet Project, UNH's Crimes Against Children Research Center, the work of Internet Solutions for Kids as well as research by professors Sameer Hinduja and Justin Patchin

Whether you like it or not, infographics are becoming a powerful e-learning tool. There is a whole lot of them around the web and we as teachers should build our own ones, and take them to the classroom. But in the meantime, we have to accept that social media as it is, it's changing the way we communicate.

Video is a powerful means of getting your message out, and podcasting can build bonds with your listener, almost as if you have been having a weekly conversation. You can use a home-made video very effectively, and people have been creating popular podcasts in their basements since the genre was invented just a few years ago.
